Back in Legion Blizzard had some kind of system that prevented there from being extremely vast differences in power levels between players. I don’t remember the exact details, but I do remember that in basically that someone could beat someone who had 50 item levels higher then them with enough skill. These days however it seems like only having a 10 item level difference can make or break a fight with someone. I am not a huge fan of this. Reasons why I like the Legion PvP system:
Skill mattered more then gear.
Gear would make a difference yes, but it was not such a huge difference it determined the battles from the get go. At least in most cases.
Battles are more interesting with the old system.
When you just destroyed very quickly with little recourse, its not that fun. However if you are the one with the high level gear, it also means you don’t have as much of a challenge so the wins feel more meaningless.
More possible battles to fight then otherwise
More people to actually have an engaging fight with = more fun.
Those were called stat templates and good riddance to them.
MMO’s are about progression, and it feels bad when you work your way towards getting better gear only to zone into a BG or Arena and your character feels neutered.
Most people don’t even get their upgraded gear doing pvp. They get it from PVE. It seems antithetical that gear obtained from PVE should dictate how well one does in PvP.
I did more PVP in legion than any other expansion pack, because I was able to level an alt to 110 and just start doing bg’s. I even did DPS for a little bit and stepped outside of my comfort zone. In Legion I was actively playing my main resto druid, but also tried Demon hunter, frost mage, marksman hunter, and every other healer too. Even tried warlock.
Now I don’t have the time to gear all those characters so I just play my Resto.
Stat templates allowed me to just log in and play. Progression for me was collecting toys, mounts, increasing my artifact weapon, and earning honor talents/levels.
Then when BFA came along it was pretty much impossible to gear your character unless you did rated so I just used the PVP heirlooms and leveled characters through bg’s that entire expansion, didn’t even touch my main. I didn’t want to do rated I just wanted casual bg’s.
Yeah, I’ve been saying for a while that PVP needs to have gear removed from the equation.
PVP doesn’t fit in an RPG in the first place, and coupling it with RPG mechanics like gearing(and even worse now with crafting), it creates a crap experience where people with more gold just flatly do better.
PVP should simply be a match of CoD with fantasy classes. Take gear out of it, and absolutely completely separate it from PVE balancing. Even Legion didn’t go far enough to remove Ilvl from PVP.
