Let’s get one thing straight; There are thousands of people better at this game than me. I don’t claim to be elite and I sincerely don’t carry an ego in WoW.
With that out of the way, I’ve been playing wow for 17 years. I genuinely miss the magic of not having a clue about BiS gear, stat priority, best talent builds, best compositions, class balance etc. Just picking a class and spec because they seemed really cool and had unique abilities rather than for the most OP options was so engaging. I was a clueless nub joining groups of other clueless nubs just pressing the buttons that felt the best. We didn’t stare at meters and judge anyone about their output. We were experiencing the game, not manipulating numbers to the best of our abilities. The numbers control what we press now.
The game evolved and I’m fine with that. Google searches and sims and all that stuff make our decisions for us. I don’t really think it’s anyone’s fault or bad game design. I just think ignorance is bliss, I guess. The World of Warcraft turned into the World of Numbers. Watching cds, watching meters, watching DRs, watching DBM, watching interrupts…
Unfortunately it’s gone for good in all massive multiplayer games. Overwatch, Age of Empires, League of Legends, and so on. You play a team-based game, you play the min/max game (Or find a group of your own to chill with).
I still do that all the time. If it makes me bad at the game, I don’t want to be good lol
This warlock has been Destro since I made him. My Hunter has been mm since like level 20 (started as bm, but didn’t like it and switched). I don’t pay attention to which classes are “good” or “bad” because I don’t care. if it’s fun I’ll play it.
I do look at the best talent builds, but I change my talents to ones I like more, instead of the “good” talents all the time. I play this game to have fun, I’m gonna make it as fun for myself as I can.
I so feel for your sentiments. I still don’t use all those addons or sim anything, but I liked it when it didn’t feel expected. I just use a few sites to help, but man it was nice when I was clueless and naive!! Those were good days: just discovering what was around the next corner and figuring my best approach.
The playerbase is mainly what changed. Classic has WoW has as much, if not more, min/maxing than retail has. The gaming playerbase has changed and there’s really no going back.
lol. the level of self-discovery is sort of gone in the era of the game being “solved”.
part of that is the amount of time the game has been out and some of it is the amount of content creators who spend a ton of time investigating classes and builds. I actually appreciate them a lot.
I guess I don’t miss having to pay 50g to respec when it took me an hour and a half to earn 50g just to experiment with a build.
I don’t really want that kind of time machine. That is sort of like going back in time before novocaine and getting dental work done. no thank you.
Same here. I remember doing Warfronts, Visions, or just grinding for fun in BfA and that was enough to satisfy me. I never had any idea how to do endgame content but ever since I discovered PvP, I’ve focused too much on gear.
