Shadowlands was really supposed to be “the one” when it comes to the good-bad xpac release cycle. So far I would say it’s pretty mediocre, but I don’t really hate it. But all this FF14 talk makes me think this game is what it was during Legion. I tried the game out and leveled to lvl 30, and I really just didn’t enjoy it. Say what you will about SL and WOW right now, but the art of this expansion may be the best yet. Sure there’s a lot of annoying systems but I’m still having a good time. What do y’all think?
Disagree. The legion atmosphere in general was miles ahead of SL in terms of feeling like a cohesive world…of warcraft. I regret not starting this game sooner and joining at the tail end of BFA.
SL zones, though in themselves aesthetically pleasing, fail to deliver in that same feeling of atmosphere and scope.
I think it is a bad expansion so far.
It’s a decent expansion but there’s only so long you can believe it has the potential to be good. 9.2 is definitely make or break.
And there’s only so many times we can praise the “gorgeous art and sound”.
Not even close. Played on the daily with guildies and we had a blast. Copious amount of time together raiding, doing arena. Now I see them once a week… maybe. They’ve done a fine job with the graphic portion, but this game isn’t legion, not even close.
It’s ok so far. Not bad but not great either. The 9.0 content drought didn’t do it any favors. Game is fun if you have people to play with, but I really do feel for those players who pug majority of content. There are just so few meaningful things to do outside of raid, M+ and PVP.
I think its a good expansion.
9.1 brings it up into legion tier for me.
However legion had one thing that this expansion has not had. And thats a well paced update schedule.
Im sure people would see shadowlands very differently if it didnt take them 2/3rds of a year to release their first content update.
Its really bad for me. Like, so bad I can hardly play it. I hate to say anything good about BFA because I don’t want to give anyone the idea that it was ok, but at least BFA had some interesting powers on gear, plenty of pets/transmogs ect to collect from islands and didn’t kill your ability to solo old raids. Even the world quests in BFA were far more tolerable than SL. BFA isn’t better than anything, but I am very tempted to say that it was better than SL because so far in SL the only thing I have been able to stand doing is 20 year old content.
If we are comparing to FF14? I think that game sucks to, but I think it sucks on a core, fundamental level where WoW only sucks right now on a systems level. WoW can be fixed if we get off this borrowed power AP systems train and go back to what made OG wow good. Cool items and simple progression.
I don’t particularly like that they made Sylvanas into the gullible person she is, or the two souls thing, or…
Well, it doesn’t matter. Even if I don’t like the content, necessarily, I do agree that the art work and the cinematics and the music are great. I can’t help but fall in love with the game whenever I see cinematics.
It’s like I have two souls when it comes to it, because how to reconcile loving the art with hating the content.
doh
I’m sorry this is 100% false even if we were to go by opinions.
The amount of difference in Legion content and Shadowlands content is STAGGERING.
Before you ask me for proof:
Legion:
- Zones, raids, dungeons.
- 12 Order Hall questlines + artifact questlines.
- Balance of power questline
- Profession questlines
- Illidan Stormrage Questline
- Suramar Questline + insurrection questline
- Return to Karazhan attunement mini questline (7.1 since you wanted to compare to 9.1)
- Demon Hunter class
Shadowlands:
- Zones, raids, dungeons.
- 4 covenant questlines (first 3 chapters are common so basically 6 unique chapters)
- Torghast questline + Torghast system.
- Korthia questlines, Assaults.
I might be missing something here but Shadowlands is a kindergarten child compared to the twelfth grader Legion.
And I have not even counted the introduction of Mythic+ and World Quests in Legion.
BFA and SL were/are trash. Legion was only good after 7.1.5/7.2. The start of Legion was just as restrictive as what we have now. Modern wow systems SUCK. FFXIV doesn’t have such crap systems where your progress is literally thrown away after an expansion.
The reason why Legion was bearable was due to the huge amount of unique content I listed above.
BFA and Shadowlands are basically Legion with the trash systems and little content.
I feel like they exhausted every bit of creativity with Legion. Order halls were impressive, gave a lot of content and story. Even the artifacts themselves had stories and “meaty” progression. Every bit of that creativity and flavor was stripped in BFA in favor of extreme bare bones boring systems.
Oh really now
I remember all too well that even back during Legion was the latest expansion everyone hated the artifact power grind, plus the campaign was time gated, along with artifact knowledge being very long to maintain
Just like now these very same forums bashed and trashed legion but now suddenly miss it
I’m not going to get caught up in good expansion vs. bad expansion, because one person’s trash is another person’s treasure and all that.
I will say that I am enjoying this expansion and I’m having fun playing it.
I should amend that to say “IMO” as that is my opinion. The SL zones do not give me the same immersive feeling that the Legion ones did and that was me just casually strolling through them with no real narrative to follow. I’m sure it would have been even better with a storyline.
Let’s see Clark comes in here riding on his Horse which he thinks is a Steed of the Heavens and then posts a link to MMOChampion and a reddit thread having 0 upvotes and 6 comments and his Horse is basically a donkey painted to look like a horse.
Can’t link the old forums buddy otherwise I would have gladly shown more of how these very forums bashed Legion at its time
So you’re saying you have nothing to show. Golly gee what a nice way to ride in here expecting to look good.
Which is why I said LOL:
I think it’s a pale imitation of Legion if that is what they were going for. While Legion was not perfect, I feel it had a lot more worthwhile writing. You felt that you accomplished something in 7.0 & 7.1.
Other than cleaning up the Covenants’ messes, which often they got themselves into, I don’t know what we’ve accomplished so far in SL. Where have we won? Where have we had a lasting impact? Speaking from the one covenant campaign I’ve finished, Maldraxxus is still a un-unified mess. The Liches, Abominations, spies, and plagues are harassing us, and the Chosen are openly defiant. Sure the blade of the Primus is in working order so that’s something?
Isn’t Sire Denathrius rescued by the Dreadlords so Castle Nathria was pointless. And Sylvanas flutters away as the Jailer wins so we lost the SoD.
I think this expresses it well. Legion just packed a lot more of a punch than Shadowlands does. It was built on better lore and utilizes its systems more effectively.
