What is with every time I log in and see chat there is always some new random word or thing being mentioned and as you can see from the topic title, it’s the word Layer.
The only possible thing I’ve see about layering came from Cataclysm which was in the form of Phasing or phases. It was originally intended as part of the Expansion due to the lore but then it slowly turned into something Blizzard did to screw with the servers. I remember way back I would be standing in SW partied with someone standing right next to each other, and yet we couldn’t see or psychically interact with each other in game as far as trading and crap. We literally had to transport ourselves to the other.
It eventually got so confusing and a became such a mess that some cities on the server became something of a major complex screw player problem by supposedly merging realms without anyone actually being in the city despite I would be right next to the person and could physically interact with them but when i tried to have them open a lockbox it said I couldn’t interact with another character form another server. I could never ever work out what was happening. To this day it still makes no sense to me
Not one person could explain what was going on. Now I see people saying Layer and it reminds me of the same thing. But I’m on Classic 20th Anniversary which doesn’t even have TBC yet nvm Cata. So what is this layer crap and what do people mean Invite them to Layer (Insert number) which is really screwy considering people are acting like Cataclysm’s phasing setup exists in 20th Anniversary and it doesn’t Even if there were different phase layer things, there is no possible way to know which one anyone was on at any given time.
On anniversary, with only 1 server of each type, the number of active players exceed what could be handled by the server such as mobs/resources, so the world is split into layers which are copies of the game world with less players than the total number logged in.
You can swap layers by being invited to a group that’s on a different layer. When people are asking in chat they are generally asking for a group invite to jump to a different layer that may be differently populated than they later they are on.
The layer you are on can be seen using addons. The only one I can recall is Nova World Buffs, but I’m sure there is others.
At one point I believe the LFG tool only looked at the layer you were in, but I haven’t played anniversary in a good while now, this may have changed.
I know they did that with Cata as I explained above but wasn’t aware they did it with Classic. And seeing the progression of Adding things to the game like they originally did, follows the norm so this layer thing really wouldn’t have existed if true classic was being followed.
So its safe to assume that this is also currently being used on classic as well to exploit servers for farming!
