I just installed FFXIV

Based off of a few different mentions in other threads, I’m giving it a shot. Somebody debrief me on how it varies from WoW - I know literally nothing about the game

It’s really a good game.

Just follow the main story quest. You have to complete it to advance the game. You’ll level and learn new skills.

You’ll get a job which is like a class in WoW. One character can be all jobs (classes effectively) just by swapping weapons.

I started my journey in Limsa Lominsa.

Lalafels for life

i couldn’t get into that game tho, so many invisible walls is a discouragement to an explorer like me

See you in a couple of weeks!

(GW2 is my alternate MMO)

Be aware that it starts out painfully slowly.

Congrats on installing FFXIV. I hear they have a great forum community that can answer your FFXIV questions!

Best advice there is. It might take a day or two to get the hang of things, but you will love it.

I was actually just thinking I am so bored with wow until flying that I might go back to my BLM (Black Mage) for the next 4-5 months. WoW is really in a pretty bad state now and I understand people wanting something NEW and EXCITING to do.

The 2.0 story is going to be brutal for most people. And the gameplay is going too feel slow at the start.

If you can man through the start and get too the pre 3.0 story lead up quests. Its going to pick up fast and the story gets a whole hell of a lot better. Along with most jobs having a lot more off global cooldown abilities for weaving between GCD’s. And almost every job is far far FAR more in depth then any class in wow at the moment.

Its not too say you won’t enjoy the 2.0 story, but a lot of people don’t like the constant running around for that part. Like I said it gets much better though.

The game also follows its own Lore well, and doesn’t retcon the crap out of stuff. So if you love the lore in games, there is a mountain of stuff to remember.

My question requires context from the perspective of a wow player to tell me what’s different and what I might want to be aware of as something I don’t usually think about. One responder already helped by making me aware and ready to hit invisable walls when I want to explore (thanks @Swiftraven).

Oh yeah that’s a good point.

Make sure you get in the mentor chat. It’s a great way to get help while you’re learning the game.

I am sure there are many former WoW players on the FFXIV forums to answer your FFXIV questions!

The joy I’ve found in playing a new MMO has basically been from discovering all the things about it myself rather than asking other people. I’ve played TERA, Rift, Blade & Soul, FireFall, Wildstar, FF14, and Elder Scrolls Online. Put in quite a bit of time in each, too. They all had great things about them.

I would take a break form the MMO type games and just play something on the Nintendo switch (legend of zelda) or PS4.

Going from one MMO to another does not work out to well.

Like ESO be prepared for a game that has controls that feel like a console game even though you use your mouse. I was tempted to pull out my XBox controller after playing awhile. Best of luck I could never get into FFXIV even though I paid $60 for it when it ARR first released. Same with ESO.

  1. Don’t bother with quests unless they are job quests, main story quests, or quests with a blue icon (these usually lead to unlocking something important.) Leveling will come from FATEs (random world events), MSQ, and dungeon finder when you unlock it. There are usually parties that farm fates in the party finder. This will make leveling a LOT better. Also, buy food for exp boosts. (I’d suggest starting with a tank for quick queues - keep in mind you can change jobs that you’ve unlocked by simply equipping the related weapon. I recommend doing the novice training things too; you’ll end up with a nice set of armor that will last you a while.

  2. You are going to be very, very, very bored at first with a long GCD and 1 or 2 moves to start. This will be the case until you learn abilities that are off the GCD to weave in between your normal rotation.

  3. Have a rough idea what job you want to main. Most jobs require 2 other jobs at level 15 or so. So Bard for example requires level 15 conjurer and level 15 archer before you can unlock it.

  4. When you learn to hire a retainer through main story quests (MSQ), be sure to keep sending them on ventures to bring you useful items to sell on the marketplace and make some gil.

  5. The story is extremely long. Can’t reiterate enough that you will be very bored and frustrated when you start fresh. MSQ is filled with dialog and animations that mostly cannot be skipped. It’s rough. The story is very good though once it picks up. But tbh if you don’t really care about story, I would consider buying the ARR story boost from the mog station so you can skip it. You could buy the Heavensward one too and skip that but I actually really liked Heavensward so I don’t recommend skipping.

You, sir, provided me with a few points that I think will help a lot. I’m not super concerned with rate of leveling or clearing story asap, I kinda enjoy most story driven stuff, so I hope I at least like this long story.

Thanks Lothorin!

Sure! If you’re story-driven, FFXIV will do right by you.

And if you roll a character on the Aether data center, (my server, Balmung, is still locked I think) I’ll be happy to help you out with any questions!

At the slog-rate WoW is going, I think that it’s more likely to be uninstalled than anything

I really miss this game. I’m currently playing WoW and ESO, which I don’t feel I can pickup another MMO (ain’t nobody got time for that) but if I weren’t playing either, I’d defintely be back in beautiful lands of Eorzea, dungeon diving, exploring and crafting.
