All our toons die to a bunch of Death Knights, so it will fit with the games story of us just being the ones that stayed behind.

Our characters are the ones who didn’t make it to TBC and instead served the LK D:

Well the events of the Death Knights attacking the Scarlet Enclave happened in while the ones that went into the Dark portal where fighting Illidan.

So it would work for them to die at the start of Wotlk events.
