I have the starter edition...

I want to upgrade. When I click upgrade it gives me Wow and MOP. Do I have to buy both or do I just need one? In the starter edition I have MOP so do I actually just need a subscription?
The base game includes the following expansions: The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, and Cataclysm.

Buying this will let you level all the way up to 85, and includes the continents of Outland and Northrend. You also get 30(?) days of game time. After that, you'll need to buy more game time and/or set up a subscription.

Starter editions do not have Mists of Pandaria, but you do have access to the Pandaren race. If you buy Mists of Pandaria, you will gain access to the Monk class and the continent of Pandaria, as well as increasing the level cap to 90.

Mists of Pandaria requires the base game.

Once Warlords of Draenor is released, buying that will grant you a level cap of 100 and unlocks the continent of Draenor. This expansion will require that you have Mists of Pandaria.

So in order to play each expansion, you must have each preceding expansion. That's just how the game is structured.
The game only has one client for everyone and that goes as high as mop which is why you see mop in the client.

What content you can play within that client depends upon what the level of your license is.

Upgrading to the initial paid version opens up content to level 85 and gives you thirty free days. After the initial 30 days, you must either pay monthly or get a subscription to keep playing.

You then need MoP to upgrade your license to open up content from level 85-90 and it also allows you to play the Monk class. There is no free game time with the MoP upgrade.

To play the forthcoming WOD, you will need both the basic game and MoP.

You do not need to upgrade to MoP until you approach level 85, but it is on sale right now for $10.

No you don't. Don't go by what races you can make or what the game's loading screen says. We ALL play with the same software on our computer, from trial accounts all the way to WoD preorders. AND all races are available to everyone (it's only the Monk CLASS that's restricted).

What locks you from the different parts of the game is your account's permission level in Blizzard's database. NOT your game install.

If you can't level past 20, talk in the chat channels, accumulate more than 10g, or join a guild, then you are a trial account.

If you can do all that stuff, but can't make a monk and are capped at level 85, then you are a Cataclysm/base upgrade account

If you can do both of those things, but didn't get an instant-90 boost for free, then you are MoP account.

If you got the insta-90, then you are a WoD account and are all set to level on to 100 when WoD releases in 3 months.

The different packages stack on top of each other, what I listed above is the limits of each one and what you get with the next level. The leveling experience will be exactly the same until you get to their respective cap limits.

Currently there's a sale on now with MoP being offered at half price ($10). NORMALLY the costs are:
$20 for the base game
$20 for MoP
$50 for WoD (the next expansion that's not out yet but will be soon).

If you upgrade, to the base package you will get one month of gametime included with the price (normally $15). You get this even if you buy the base + MoP package deal or buy all three at once.

Also, once upgraded beyond the trial account status, your account will be permanently upgraded and thus will need gametime on it to be playable. If the gametime runs out, your characters and that WoW license/account will become locked. You will NOT lose your characters though. They will be kept in stasis just as you left them, even YEARS later. If you do decide you want to return to the game after that, you just need to put gametime on the account again.

You can also have multiple WoW accounts on the same battle.net login. Many players have multiple WoW accounts. Each one has it's own individual account level and gametime requirements. This means you can have one upgraded and one perpetual free trial account. Or two upgraded accounts but one that you've allowed to lapse and one that you actively play. Or three accounts, one of each (active upgraded, lapsed upgraded, free trial).
I have the starter edition of World of warcraft. If i upgrade it for $10.00 through battle.net do i get all the way up to cataclysm?

Right now I only see Mists of Pandaria for ten dollars. There may be a sale not showing up for me, though. Like said in the previous replies, you will be required to have the base game before you can have Mists of Pandaria. The base game is all the way up to Cataclysm.

When you first log in as a trial account, you get an extra splash screen where you can choose to play the trial, or upgrade for 50% off ($10). I guess it's the upgrade offer, it's been that way since they removed the time limit and I only ever see the price differ when the base game goes on sale (making it five bucks).
can you play an account that has the game an a starter addition on the same account want to get my little niece to start playing with me? so all have her on my laptop and me on my computer till she gets the hang of it. Is that possible?
You can't be logged into the same account at the same time from two different computers. When you log in on the second computer, the first one will get disconnected.

If you & your niece want to play the game together, you'll have to set up a separate account for her.

If you have two separate licenses on the same Battle.net account, you can log into both at the same time. (So, for example if you have a regular wow account and then make a starter account, you could use both at the same time.)

You can't be logged into two computers on the same Battle.net account at the same time, but you don't need to keep the Battle.net app up once you are in game on the first computer.

From a EULA standpoint, you aren't supposed to share a B.net account with someone who isn't your child (or a child that you are the guardian of.) You can set up her own battle.net account for free (or if she's under 13, help her parents set one up in their name for her — that's what I did when my young cousin was playing with me.)

Aside from the EULA issues, this also means that if she really gets into the game, you aren't in a situation where she'd face losing any account bound stuff she earned when you got to separate the accounts. (All the account stuff stays with the B.net account, not the license.) Getting her her own account will save issues down the line. (And even if her parents already have a B.net account, they can set up a second in their name just for her is she's too young for her own.)
Setting her up with her own battle.net account, even if it's just for a starter edition, will allow the setting of parental controls on her account without also affecting your account.

I have purchased all the expansions. Leveled a character to 120. Now i kinda just want to make a lvl 19 twink and just check in from time to time. Unfortunatly I didnt expect there to be so many restrictions on the starter edition. You can’t even really make a lvl 19 twink in starter edition. And this gold restriction is annoying. Makes it hard to empty bags at venders. I gave my twink a little gold before the timer ran out. I know this seems silly, but who do I write to get that fixed. I mean i’ve paid money and will probably re-sub later. Like when next expansion comes out for sure. Theres so many great games that are free now. I kinda think of pvp as a base representation of the game. A fair free base game would keep circulation I think for server populations and increased interactions. The changes are really minor.
