I have decided to level a Mage as a solo player. Have i made a mistake?

I have been eyeballing a Mage for quite some time at this point alongside a Priest, Hunter, or a Warlock, but last night I decided to go ahead and take the plunge. And so far I’m really enjoying it i think. The class fantasy is fantastic and I love the look of their tier sets. Also it’s kind of fun just spamming Arcane Missiles and watching everything just explode.

BUT

I can’t help but feel a bit nervous looking forward. The Mage is famous for its squishiness and I am not the best player as it is. But I don’t really plan on going much further than a bit of normal raiding. Maybe some Heroic if I am feeling a bit adventurous. But I will be doing all of it alone. Due to my work I have completely random times of playing so it’s hard to find a guild or group to consistently level with.

But I have seen that the Lock and the Hunter is always recommended for solo players. As well as the Disc priest.

So should I quit while I am ahead and switch to a Lock, Priest, or Hunter? Or is the difficulty of the Mage a bit overblown?

No. Mage is very powerful.
You have food, mobility, burst and CC’s.

And they’re getting a buff in 8.3.

I leveled as frost and it was a cakewalk. The slows make it ez mode and the aoe is good. Honestly you can play any class and be fine with normal content, even if you are not the best player.

Oh they are getting buffed?

Ice Lance is getting a 20% increase damage buff.
Frost is getting buffed.

Frost?

Judging from the other posters you should be just fine, let alone the planned buffs…

Fire, that would likely be a completely different animal.

I still remember stories from a friend about his Living Bomb Fire Mage.

Sounded so fun…

Good luck! I heard fire was a great leveling spec…no it wasn’t. Mage is least fun for me. I can solo most stuff as other classes and specs (excluding rogue and mage) I wish they would just build a baseline slow into their spells across all specs and not have them rely on frost nova.

Fire and arcane are my favorite but you feel pigeon holed into frost to level. Frost is tres zzzzzzz imo.

Nah Mage is great, play whatever you relate to the most.

Leveling is a breeze on basically any class.

If you don’t know how to kite it’s good to practice now as your leveling. Wow leveling isn’t hard as it used to.

Does mage require kiting? Because i have tried that before and i am not good at it at all. I have a bad habit of sitting still.

Just really for pvp. Rarely do you have to do it. But if you know how to do it you can pull a bunch of mobs together. It’s a skill that really makes mage leveling way better.

Level as Frost, you’ll be fine.

My Mage has been Frost since Vanilla and I’ve always loved it.

You have no self healing abilities whatsoever, so you better learn defensive skills early

Frost Shield.

Plus, you have Frost Nova. Learn to kite and you’ll do fine, OP.

I really like leveling as fire but mage is a good choice in any spec!

Personally I would say yes. You’re very group-reliant, without someone to tank for you you’re going to be running around in little circles trying to kill stuff before it kills you.
Most mages saying they’re great alone are either geared enough or low enough that they can kill most mobs in 2-3 casts.
Mages big defense is kiting but they kinda suck at kiting. Your root breaks easily and your primary slow has a 2 second cast time. (Blizzard please let us cast Frostbolt while moving. We already know you can make spells function differently in PvP vs PvE so balance isn’t an excuse)
