Anyone else struggling in mythic plus as disc? Disc has been great up until i started doing mythic plus, now it seems the dps lose their health so fast from mobs, ads, standing in stuff… i can’t keep up with damage to heal + focus on mechanics. Atonement isn’t cutting it. Thinking of trying holy
Just got to practice and try and know what’s coming up. Personally I like holy better because I feel like I have the toolkit for more situations.
At the end of the day some people just cant be healed if they mess up mechanics.
I’d say traits are somewhat important. Need to have 1x Enduring Luminescence no matter what. I currently also run 3x Depth of Shadows because I like the potential big mend to recover outside of atonement healing. That isn’t to say there aren’t situations where you SPAM shadowmend because you will find yourself doing that a lot.
I almost always run Shadow Covenant because it’s a quick burst aoe heal and dps tend to like to get hit by everything. I’d imagine if you had a set group you could swap out Covenant if you can rely on people doing mechanics properly.
Other then that it’s just learning when to cast radiance/sheilds/mends for atonement and when to swap to damage. Also Tanks should be able to mitigate a LOT of dmg if played properly(healing/absorb/stagger/etc), if you see tanks flop instantly it’s on them. Also I’d run Holy fire instead of Mindbender and you pretty much need to run Schism as well especially for weeks like this. ToF is only useful on Bursting weeks in my opinion.
You’re mixing in some Shadow Mend / direct healing, right? Atonement isn’t supposed to cover everything. Also making good use of CDs is a game changer. Outside of certain affixes, I’m not having a terrible time as Disc. I go Holy when I want a more relaxing run, and I absolutely encourage everyone to try both.
Its not easy to play without using shadow mend. Its not for everyone. Task swapping is not what all people do well, it takes a certain kind of player. I play holy because I have a ton of tools, much more relaxing. Holy dps is not interesting or game changing, but you can do a few things between heals. I find taking my eyes off the health bars is nerve wracking. Disc will really feel bad at first, when half the group is down 50 per cent and your tank is dying…and you are at 30 per cent and you have this stupid shadow mend and hope you can somehow get enough dps off to raise the health bars…bah…
But in raids, its the only way to go for me. It is really nice there, where I can keep many people up by just casting damage. M+, well, the ones I know, rolled monks and now have left the priest behind with a taste of just how strong monks are in M+
I got up to +6’s last season and never got my ilvl above 365ish. This season has been much more difficult as the difficulties have ramped up. I’ve been trying a new build, going Schism, Purge the Wicked, and Sins of the Many. I’m thinking of going back to Twist if Fate, Divine Star, and Shadow Covenent like I was doing last season. I just find that second build to be more consistent for me, and less stressful.
Biggest tip I can give, use mouse over macros for all your healing spells. You should never be directly targeting a player when you’re playing Discipline. Multi dot up all the mobs with SWP, Penance offensively pretty much on CD. Keep atonement on the Tank with PWS. Rapture is an amazing “oh $%#*” button as is Pain Suppression. They are on relatively short CDs so use them liberally. Spam Shadowmend if necessary.
Just adding my 2c to what others have already said, for runs where I think i’m going to have a hard time, I normally take twist of fate, shadow covenant and divine star.
So far on difficult runs I’ve found it helpful using radiance frequently to keep group atonements up preemptively, and try get sw pain on a few mobs in each pack. Atonement + divine star through your group plus a pack of mobs gives a nice aoe burst of healing, and shadow covenant helps to top them off.
Defensive penance and shadowmend are handy when people take big hits, and as others have said make sure you use cooldowns early when you see things going downhill - especially make liberal use of rapture as it’s such a short cd.
Once you know which pulls suck in each dungeon you can plan your cds accordingly.
I don’t think I can get into the mouse over macro thing. I’ve been playing without macros forever and just used to it.
It’s awkward to switch to mouseovers at first (I swore up and down it was too difficult to rewire my brain like that), but it’s worth it in the long run, on every healer. And it’s almost mandatory if you want to get good at Disc. Instead of macros, I use add-ons to get mouseover functionality (first Clique, now VuhDo). If that’s absolutely a no-go for you, that’s fine, but then I would switch to another healer.
Depending of your level of play it might be possible to do it without mouseover functionality for your heals but you’ll definitely be less efficient, if you want to start pushing M+ and doing harder content I really recommend you find a way to add it, specially if you are playing Disc.
There are some addons that can help you in case you don’t want to write the macros yourself.
Does VuhDo and Clique work with UI addon like z perl?
I don’t use z perl, so I can’t say for certain, but I hear Clique worked with x-perl. VuhDo is its own set of raid frames, specially designed for healers.
Of course this is personal preference, but I’d just like to offer another perspective - I don’t think mouseover are nearly so important for disc that you’d need to reroll if you’d like not to use them. For m+ specifically, your damage as disc is quite significant - part of the skill of the spec will be correctly choosing which targets to dps, so there already is a good amount of target swapping involved.
Additionally, you’ll be target swapping frequently in m+ simply for the sake of SW:P/PtW.
Lastly, smend is better than you may think - there is a perception that disc doesnt have good single target “oh crap” healing, but smend spam on a tank is not by any means weak.
So I just youtubed how to create the mouse over macro, I will give it a go.
Honestly, I’ve played Disc since BC and was resistent to it for so long. I finally switched to mouse overs right before Legion when we had the rework that added Plea and I’ve never looked back. It does take a while to get used to, but it’ll change the way you play (and for me enjoy) healers. I even use mouse overs on my other healers now because I find it easier in general. If it matters, I’m using the unit frames in ElvUI.
BFA season 2 m+ seems way easier than season 1 (or maybe I just learned how to play.)
Alright I just wanted to report back here, i created the macros last night, it was quite simple and after some practice in BG’s I am really liking it, can see why this is a game changer.
If there are any lurkers here who are thinking of creating their own mouse over macros, this is the video that taught me:
Thanks everyone for the feedback.
