I have a level 80 demon hunter but... I want to switch to do some tanking

How hard is tanking with a Demon Hunter and do I need to completely change my gear? This is my 4th character so it isn’t one I play all the time and has an ilvl of 610.

It depends on the type of content you’re wanting to do.
If you want to do more casual things on them, then swapping would be pretty simple. Both specializations share the same stat priority, so overall you’d be fine.
If you want to do Raiding or Mythic+ I’d recommend having DPS and Tank specific trinkets, as that’s where the gear really differs. Same thing with your Cyrce’s Circlet gems.

As for difficulty, I feel like Vengeance is in a good spot to learn. A couple things to remember is using your defensive before you pull and utilizing soul generators/spenders so you can keep yourself alive. Both the Demon Hunter Hero specs are pretty passive so you won’t have to worry too much about being active. I recommend Aldrachi personally since it really builds into the idea of making/spending soul fragments.

you dont have to change your gear much, haste makes the spec feel better in a sense cause faster gameplay but ultimately all 4 secondaries have some what of a good dps and defensive value. you focus more on ilvl more than anything

i highly suggest looking at the wowhead and icyvein guides more than asking for help here cause alot of sus takes from sus people

if you want to take mopre steps forward you can join the felhammer discord and ask whatever question you have about veng there and theres plenty of people willing to help you reach your best possible self

veng is probably the more demanding tank spec to play, especially to play well. you are pressured to keep being active and to press something each gcd. there is no “oh sh** button” you have to cycle your defensives and keep using them on cd unless you know something is coming in the next few seconds. you are a hybrid of a prot warrior and a bdk so the amount of damage you do is the amount of sustain healing you do.

i personally recommend felscarred cause it hammers in the basics of vdh, aka you press your cds you press your buttons and you use your spenders at 4-5 souls

I was curious about this.

What is the priority, if one is using the same priority for both specs?

Crit, Mastery, Haste?

I’m a Follower/TW/LFR/Open World casual Andy, so feel free to disregard my opinion where it isn’t relevant.

But DH as a whole, but especially Veng feels to me like a more “modern” action-rpg combat style compared to other classes in WoW and that’s what I like about it.

It’s why I end up back on my DH no matter how much time I spent leveling other classes.

According to Archon Haste > Crit > Mastery > Vers for Vengeance and Havoc is Crit > Mastery > Haste> Vers but states that may be bias based on gear availability.

i mean thats fine, all angles of feedback is important especially when they are for gameplay feel

i wouldnt know what a modern action rpg combat style would feel like. but i do know that vdh is very active and punishes rotational down time

its a tank that wnats you to do as much damage as you can to reward you woith more defensive power. this is something for some reason alot of vdh rerollers dont want to understand

i wouldnt use that

i would sim your upgrades. generally its ilvl>crit=haste>verse=mastery

VDH plays a lot like a very tanky DPS.

Its upsides are

-tremendous mobility: infernal strike (leap), vengeful retreat and fel rush
-excellent mob control via sigils and aoe stuns. these have been nerfed but are still tremendously useful
-very solid damage dealing and mitigation

its downside is that it takes some time to ramp up your defensives and can be punishing if you are caught without them at a bad time. the mobility can make up for that.

this season in particular, you really do have a choice between hero talents.

fel scarred is the most straightforward and feels a lot like previous iterations of VDH.

I am really liking aldrachi in m+.

I have tinkered with what I like in the build now. I am running sprit bomb and focusing on sigils (rather than brand).

while aldrachi can take some time to ramp up and proc, you have the ability to choose how to plan and respond to either aoe or single target scenarios.

to start, you might want to use fel scarred. you more or less just use all your CDs as they come up to do your damage and keep your defensives up. aldrachi does take more planning and execution.

ymmv

Some people here would like to burn me at the stake when I mention this, but you have options in the talent tree with how hard or easy you want to make the spec. Some of the easiest play builds are plenty sturdy and do fine damage for all but the very highest levels of content.

VDH is upper mid at this point, though at lower key levels is probably somewhat easy. The rotation has devolved a bit in SC spam, so it has less entry level gating than it did when pressing SPB at the right target, soul and debuff counts was important.

Secondaries are secondary for VDH. Haste is preferred because it feels good, but Crit and Mastery are quite good for physical defense and Vers is an alright stat all around, so you shouldn’t need to switch any gear at all. Agi is always the top priority.

please run brand talents, theres like 0 reason not to run brand talents
