Not saying they shouldn’t be in the game, and if you like them I’m happy for you, but I’m finally working on the Detective title and uuuuuuuuugh. This suuuuuucks.
Here’s what I hate: the puzzles usually do not give enough of a clue for just average players to even know where to start in some cases. Like one that comes to mind is a feather that has “fallen from a great height” with the only clue being the Spires of Arak zone. There’s lots of great heights in Spires of Arak. It’s in the name. And guess what, once you find the right “great height” the feather hasn’t even fallen. It’s on top of the “great height”!
All the puzzles are like this. The solution is to look them up on Wowhead and just follow the directions, which is not fun. It’s busywork. And best also to use something like TomTom to point you exactly where you need to go. I’m not doing this part, I guess because I don’t want to deal with another addon or I hate myself? or maybe I want to keep some semblance of actually playing, not assembling a piece of Ikea furniture.
I don’t know what the solution is. I know there’s players out there that love solving WoW puzzles with next to no clues. But I’m sure a lot of us would like some useful hints. Maybe let us get more hints for a smaller reward. I mean, I’d love to solve puzzles that weren’t like “It’s an item somewhere in Jade Forest. Good luck.” It’s not really solving a puzzle without clues to figure out and piece together. It’s just an Easter egg hunt.
And the truth is that all these “we love puzzle” people on the Secret’s discord, are for the most part lying as well.
I was there when we went about discovering the hidden crates, and it had absolutely NOTHING to do with analyzing clues. And more with taking a MASSIVE amount of people and just throwing them in a zone until someone inevitably hit jackpot.
That really isn’t “solving” a secret so much as it is to say you “lockpicked” a lock with a bat until it broke lol.
Not all of them, it’s mostly the crates and maybe a few of the sidequests.
… and from what I’ve heard, the bike is something of a nightmare.
The main questline is probably a bit too hand-holdy at times, but there’s plenty of clues in that one. Except that one that needs all those random fish.
The “sidequests” vary, but many of them have notable clues… though maybe a few are too reliant on knowing what happened in past expansions. The crates are… weird, but they seem to veer a bit more towards the pixel hunting and bizarre context clues.
In any case, they were definitely designed with the expectation that the hardcore clue-finders would solve the problem and post it on WoWhead for everyone else to follow.
Blizz doesn’t really design stuff for “average players”, they’re trying to outfox the madmen.
Some people love puzzles. Some weren’t too difficult. Others fell into “I dont have time for this” and went to WH. And I think they are designed for that. Or we would still be like old times for quests where we had to figure out everything for quests. Where to go and what to do once there. Now its hard to figure out or hand held the whole way
the clues are reasonable
also, waiting until <1 week left on the anniversary event to start won’t really earn you any sympathy
I think the more interesting part is watching the entire community go after these things when they release, with an absolute flood of messages and potential leads on the secret finding disc in real time
reminds me of playing original destiny / some d2 and trying to find exotics with the community
Yea well when you’re only give ONE rogue companion in the entire game sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do or tolerate being sexually harassed by a super handsome and charismatic vampire all game.
