I Hate Feeling Punished for Wanting to Play a Different Character

I never even realized there was a catch-up mechanic for the neck. And if they can do it for that, why not for essences too?

Iā€™ve been pretty reluctant to advance my alts into the Nazjatar campaign so far, concentrating on doing the gold WQs and cleaning up some older content for achievements and transmogs with them. It took a lot out of me getting them to 120 in the first place, so I donā€™t think adding more grind to characters I want to use as a break from my main will go over well with my brain.

The answer is the time played metric. They want us to have to log in every day.

If that is the case, why did they implement a catch-up mechanic for AP?

No one caught so far behind would bother trying to climb that mountain and give up entirely on raiding, the newest mythic dungeons, and pvp. Itā€™s a balance between rewarding committed players who keep their sub up and those who join the expansion later on.

Sorry to hear buddy, I canā€™t relate.
Only Race Iā€™ve ever been interested in are Blood Elfs and the only class, Priest.
Everything else doesnā€™t appeal to me.

Thatā€™s simply not true, it rewards people for playing 1 character, not logging in and playing. I have played BFA since it was released. I played my priest and raided all of Uldir and got AotC in 8.0. After a while I got bored and decided to play a resto druid. In 8.2 I got 7/8 H EP on my druid after getting all my essences. Now if I switch back to my priest and get him to 430, I still have to do Naz all over again for rank 3 Lucid dreams, which is B.S. It has nothing to do with rewarding players who play the game, it is a flawed system that punishes players for wanting to play more than one character because there is a list of chores that must be done to stay raid viable.

Agreed. Iā€™ve always been confused by thisā€¦

With 13 classes to play - why would you put barriers in the way of allowing players to experience the game from so many different perspectives when thereā€™s SO MANY other ways of progressing those other characters outside of essences.

Couple that with the fact that the essences are still TIME-GATED. Itā€™s one thing to say you have to RE-earn the essences - but what is really gained by time gating them over and over again?

Iā€™ve seen so many people leave WoW this tier specifically when they hit the point where they start to play on their other characters. They realize they have to regrind the essences, see other games that donā€™t have anywhere near the restrictions WoW has in place between classes/roles - and they jump ship to play those other games.

Such a loss.

The community would benefit so much from having itā€™s players be experienced from so many different angles.

If this was the only thing to do on characters - sure, it wouldnā€™t be good.

But you still have to go through the war campaign on each character. Still have to grind through AP on each character. Still have to roll through the RNG casino to get geared. Still have to level up professions. Still have to farm materials/herbs. Still have to get new consumables.

Thereā€™s TONs of actual content available outside of the essence requirements.

But when players cancel their sub and play another game - that negatively impacts the time-played metric, the sub metric, and their revenue.

Donā€™t forget the rep grinds.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.ā€¦ So lets make the last 3 expansions mostly focused on your main or whatever you did first.
(Those 3 being WoD/Legion/BFA)

And the new legendary cloak being added to those grinds in 8.3.

Luckily, I no longer raid so I can completely ignore grinding essences. If they unlock, itā€™s just a bonus to me. I donā€™t even bother with them on alts.

Completely agree with you here. It seems like they are trying so hard to make us log in that it is having the reverse effect and pushing people away from the game.

Youā€™ve essentially boiled down why Iā€™m so behind this expansion, this is my fourth attempt at a class. I wonā€™t be trying out anything else I donā€™t think. I simply donā€™t have the time or inclination, Iā€™d unsub before I grind another alt at this point.

Shame because Iā€™m usually playing multiple characters at once, and thereā€™s a higher probability Iā€™ll simply unsub if I get bored of this character rather than attempt to raise up another. For some reason it feels like the last time it was truly comfortable to play alts was WoD, believe it or not. And Legion was better than BfA, if only just so (at least unlocking the artifact weapon was class/spec unique).

There definitely needs to be a balance there.

That said, there should always be enough to do that someone playing only one character should never be truly out of things worth doing.

Iā€™m not sure how to pull that off without alienating one side or the other.

Well thatā€™s why I had the edit in there that you didnā€™t include. There is a lot to do in the game. If everything was accomplished once (the main parts) it frees a person up to do other stuff. Instead of rehashing the main story lines.

I mean I get it - from their end, itā€™s a balancing act.

But at some point - is one of the grinds (out of the long list of grinds already in the game) really worth the pain and attrition the setup is causing?

But you are acting like the content that is required to upkeep these character essences is fun. I like Nazjatarā€¦the first time. But I donā€™t know a single player who wants to do Naz twice so they can get Lucid Dreams on 2 characters. I donā€™t know anyone who enjoys Island expiditions, I can go on and on. I love mythic plus, I loved the first time going through Naz, but having to get that rep all over again makes no sense to me.

And making account wide essence ranks does not effect the 1 character player even in the slightest. It benefits the people who like bouncing around characters without feeling the need to log in every single damn day.
