I guess I don't get it

Trying to random queue my way up in rated pvp to work on the spider mount, everyone says how overpowered Ret is with “constant” 20-25k final verdict crits, but honestly I usually experience Blade --> Strike --> Sera --> Wake --> Wings --> Judge --> Final Reckoning --> 5k Final Verdict.

Only thing I can figure is I am Venthyr and not Kyrian, but I’m not switching, I’d rather bring the dps to raid.

From a PVP standpoint is there something wrong with my build or talents that I am missing? I never seem to experience these massive crushing crits that people are complaining about.

That’s the problem. For Ret Pallies, Kyrian is the way to go if you want to be firing off massive FV crits.

For the rest of us Ret Pallies, we just dfo what we want.

Probably those people have defensive cooldowns up. A 20k crit would be ~12k non-crit, which is 6k into a 50% wall.

In arena, you’ll probably get a bunch of defensives with your first set of wings; the second or third set, when they’re out of cooldowns, is when you can gib people.

Divine Toll is a big component of Ret pvp burst, yeah. Wings into Toll instantly lets you get out a lot of burst before people can react.

Kyrian does equal or better for raid DPS, for what it’s worth - not by enough that you should feel like you have to switch if you like Venthyr, but don’t feel like you’re stuck Venthyr for pve either.

If only we had a system that didn’t force people to only be good in one type of content.

That is actually good to know. I really like Venthyr thematically but if it is pretty decent for both, I may consider switching.

Blizz really has things in the crapper right now. Yikes.

If you swap and then immediately do the first weekly to start swapping back, you could be Venthyr again as soon as Tuesday, so it’s relatively painless to try out. If you’ve already got FV, you have the right legendary for Kyrian on most bosses.

no offense but your gear is trash. the rets cranking those fat tvs are 226+ ilvl with either 226 or 232 weps and 226 badge. makes a huge difference

Yeah the rets who do massive dmg are full pvp gear and also kyrian. Blizz screwed over a lot of classes with covenants and paladin is no exception.

Im a 2.2k venthyr ret and i could have went 2.4 if i spent the time, so it can be done. But kyrian has a massive advantage…not just a little.

Focus on dropping hallow on major clash points. Right on the flag. Call out that you are dropping it or everyone on your team will run out instinctively. Then use the teleport to your advantage, the door of shadows with the disorient effect soulbind thing can be used with good effect on a group of enemy healers.

Your gear will get better along with your damage. Good luck

I just recently went kyrian from ret.

Divine toll feels good btw and i have fv lego but my damage feels meh as well i think you need 220+ and full pvp gear to hit those numbers.

Sort of begs the question that if my maxxed-out-for-my-rank pvp gear, with Heroic versatility off-pieces are trash, as you so kindly put it, and that hinders me from pumping the damage necessary to get to the rank for better gear, how do other people do it? M+ to 226 and then use that to get 1600-1800 for the equivalent pvp gear? Pay for a carry? I’m open to suggestions.

It also doesn’t help that arena is rife with paid carries so at 1300 I am getting paired against 1600-1700 somethings who melt me like I’m butter. That is a different topic though.

Its easiest to get your foot in the door at the beginning of a season. The climb will be more linear and less meme-feeling. Doesn’t help now but the next patch will be better when its fresh.

Also making friends and getting into communities will benefit you in the long run. You will have a lot of “return customers” with rbgs and those bonds will help you climb.

Paying for a carry only hurts you. Youll end up in a rating you don’t deserve and will massively underperform and get cast out of the main rbg teams for the season.

Also don’t waste time in groups with no real structure. Just leave. You should be able to tell if youll win or lose your first game within 30 seconds of joining a group. Always voice, you need a specific comp, and everyone should be at a certain rating.

Inspect all of your group members and make sure they aren’t a bunch of noobs that the leader is trying to carry. One crap player can tank your rating, and it happens frequently.

Also, 90% of the players blatantly lie about their XP and CR, it’s a problem.

Yeah I actually didn’t pvp at all at the start of the season, My mage has always been my pvp toon but this time I thought I would just run one character and do everything. Thankfully rediscovered my love of pvp and ret actually feels pretty good.

I’m starting to get a little traction, found a few people that I work well with but no solid partners yet.

The discussion has been good though, I really appreciate all the responses.

I would consider switching. After looking you over it’s not like you’re bleeding edge min maxing for raid, so why not go Kyrian. It’s better for M+, Better for pvp, and only a little worse in raid. Plus having a 1 min CD burst rotation feels a lot better.

I’m thinking I’ll give it a shot. I don’t have plans on raiding beyond heroic, but PVP is something I can do just about any time.
