I get motion sickness when playing WoW Classic but not Retail

This is the weirdest issue I’ve ever had with playing the entirety of World of Warcraft and I haven’t found anyone with a similar issue yet. In the default retail game I have no visual issues whatsoever, and have not had any visual issues with any other game my entire life.

For some reason with Classic though, I experience some sort of motion sickness and I don’t really know why. I log into the game and make a character and within minutes I experience sea sickness as if I were on a boat. I really don’t get it. Has anyone else experienced something similar? I’ve toyed around with settings but not to much success. I was able to level a shaman to 30 at least a few months back before I called it quits and took a break for awhile.

That is very strange. Maybe go into retail settings and copy everything down and look up how retail refreshes the image rendering, frame rates etc. Someone else that actually knows how that all works will hopefully comment.

Then compare with classic. Its weird because they are supposedly using the same engine.

Lastly go download an original 1.12 client on a private server. Calm down Blizz, its for science. Log into that and see if you experience the same thing.

The only other thing I can think of is control other variables like diet, sleep, lighting, other background sounds or visual stimulus etc etc between playing retail and classic to ensure its not another factor.

Good luck

Any lighting settings can affect you in that way. Blizz introduced better graphics to Classic, so obviously the lighting, shadows and all of that is better.
If that’s not the issue then i can’t imagine what is, but just removing most of the shadow effects and any effects that are affecting the lighting and also smoothing models, will pbbly help you in this case.
Also you can change the camera movement speed. Maybe that’s too fast or idk.

This is interesting because it happens to me too, only in retail and not classic.

As a frequently nauseated person i have a limited amount of games that I can play without wanting to hurl. Wow is somehow one of them.

Have you tried turning some of your settings down? Especially liquid detail.

i was getting dizzy while running thru too thick of ground cover in classic, especially on my shorter characters. In retail if i go on a long mining excursion on a flying mount same thing.

Sorry to hear it, but you’re not the only one. Mine is more retail though. I had to stop playing the beta for one of those xpacs after MoP, because it was making me sick (can’t remember which one, maybe WoD, it’s been a minute). One of my issues in retail is not being able to zoom out far enough though. Certain vehicle stuff made me sick over the years too like Flame Leviathan.

Since I’ve come back to the game (came back a few months before Classic hit) I’ve found that it varies. Do check your zoom and your settings, but yeah, sometimes you just have to take a break.

Generally speaking newer games should haved more features like head bob and other things that make movement more realistic

Other than falling i get no physical reaction playing…But i can imagine

Zoom out, reduce head bob or whatever. Drink some water

Retail does that to me until i get used to it which takes a couple of hours. I also have to turn the graphics down. All the weather and atmospheric stuff flying around give me a headache when i log in and haven’t for a long time.

I get motion sick if sometimes when I use a noggen fodder elixir and become small. Is your main character a gnome? Perhaps that is why you’re getting motion sick. Try playing the largest race in classic - The Tauren.

It’s understandable that gnomes makes you sick…

I’ve discovered through some trials and experimentation that the worst culprit for this is the undead starting area, which is unfortunate since I do like the undead.

I also like shamans too though, which is why I rolled an orc in classic. I think he was the best to play without any sickness.

As I’m typing this, it’s making me wonder…Maybe it’s the ground textures? I’m not looking at them primarily when I play classic, but perhaps grass somehow causes disorientation. I’ll experiment later when I get more time and can handle being dizzy.

Haha that feel when you jump off a cliff and your butt clenches

No wonder my legdays were better in August.

That’s actually incorrect and I’ll prove it to you. Stand up, walk around for half minute- now put on a game with head bob. Notice the difference? Your eyes have a sense of equilibrium if they’re working correctly that adjusts for walking so you don’t get that head bob thing IRL, while walking or even jogging your field of view isn’t jerking up and down like crazy as games with head bob imply.

Head bob in games is very unrealistic and that’s part of the reason it makes people sick while walking does not- and people who have major sensory issues that make their eyes not balance quickly enough often suffer nausea/vertigo if they turn too quickly or jump because they get ‘head bob’ effect IRL.

Just an aside- to OP, I get motion sickness from games/being in a car, one thing to consider is changing camera distance. I generally am fine with WoW, but there’s a few places that get me, most noticably I always feel sickened in the WotLK spider dungeon- there’s a part after the vampire boss where you go into a very low ceiling tunnel, and that closeness to the character as I ran through the tunnel gets me every time.

Sometimes changing settings, camera distance, things like lighting/particle effects or graphics helps, it might be worth at least trying.

i can tell you why… stand still in stv and watch the trees or make a new elf and go stand in front of that starting zone cave then hit space bar and watch as the world moves like the cave floor will do weird crap and the trees in stv will too. its not a solid world…
