I did not have a cellphone before covid. I frankly could not care about being able to use them for payments, storing tickets, or ID. What made me really want to get one is
Wells Fargo used to hold my 401k and I forgot the password to it. The only two ways to get the reset was 1) sent to the cellphone on file or 2) request a form be mailed out to me requesting a reset, fill it out, mail it back out and wait up to week. That was unreasonable for me which gave the big push I needed to get a cellphone. I still have my VOIP, true landlines are too expensive.
Banking was my main reason for a phone, everything else is perk.

You can have it on a tablet or a phone with no number. It’s just an app from the app store. You can get used phones for very little.

That part is true they know my service address. But that’s all they know they know nothing about my online activity or anything else.
That’s why I don’t use Google Drive. I only use cloud storage with zero knowledge encryption.
This line of replies all started when the guy says that the blizzard app can track his phone location for targeted ads purposes which it can’t. Thinking guy just want to complain for the sake of complaining.

Can youse get a phone from the government?
I have both types of phones for much the same reasons including two factor authentication.
Cell phones are flexible and mobile but cell service is one of the first things to fail in a major disaster while landlines tend to remain viable. Works fine if one has the lowest expense plan for both. I also keep both phone services from my ISP as I really don’t need a single point of failure for all of my ways of contacting the world. Well, outside of taking a drive or a walk…
