… Until we see a follower dungeon expansion/rework.
Usually you’d get one where they put the new dungeon coming with 11.1, but that’s pointedly not even “heroic only” as far as I know.
If there’s one thing we’ve learned from season 1 of TWW, with full follower support in all dungeons and story mode raiding, it’s that the age of “this bit of PVE storytelling requires you to form a group” is over, and thank goodness. That’s long overdue. You basically then can’t go back into the “heroic/mythic only” realm of megadungeons until followers can hack it.
According to Ion, apparently we’re just a “reward structure” away from what I’ve been calling “Warband Dungeons,” when we fill the blanks in our dungeon group with our own alts. I personally speculate that this will give an upward mobility to follower dungeons into heroics and mythic zero, provided that the alts you’re bringing can meet the gear threshold. Now, that’s not very high, you might say, but honestly, if the reward structure is (once again playing off what Ion has stated as a natural design destination) meant to potentially gear up to five of your own characters at once, it should probably be capped reasonably, and to be quite frank M0 is good enough for your truly alty-alts that you only take out to throw more bodies at old content farming, or as a foundation for “serious gearing” in other paths.
But yeah, I don’t think they’re going to do a “story that leads to a megadungeon that has no normal mode” until followers go higher than normal, and that’s likely waiting for “Warband dungeons.”
… Or just a one-time-ever story mode quest for the whole megadungeon (like the Rookery) , but if you’re doing that you might as well make it fully follower-supported.
Just a thought. Happy holidays all!
I mean the trend of having one since BfA has held true for 3 expansions. But I agree that it might change based on the timeline.
If the trend holds true the next Megadungeon should be somewhere in Season 2 but this could likely be replaced by Nightfall - Horrific Visions (https://www.icy-veins.com/wow/news/horrific-visions-return-in-war-within-patch-11-1-5-nightfall/).
I hope not. I love the idea of them, but I haven’t gotten to participate in one yet. Unless you count vanilla BRD. <3 Vanilla BRD.

Personally I feel like megadungeons missed the mark. It shouldn’t have been about the dungeons being long or having lots of bosses/being hard, it was about all the branching paths you could take and lose yourself in. Go take a stroll through BRD and in almost every room there’s a choice of several ways to go that all interconnect and feed back into each other. Meanwhile Dawn of the infinite is a hallway that leads to a room with hallways all along the way for each of the bosses before a midboss, before you do the whole thing again but with 2 hallways instead of 1 this time. Operation Mechagon was more or less the same deal just a choice of what order you did things in up front before a long series of corridors with rooms for the bosses.
Maybe I’m just expecting too much, but I think the megadungeons were better when you could actually explore them rather than ride the tube to victory.

now that they are doing trilogy sagas, the only mega dungeon, I could ever see in the future would be the last dungeon of the third expansion and the last raid as a mega raid. Something huge that wraps it all together.
Back in classic megadungeons are just dungeons.

They already confirmed no mega dungeon for TWW. We’re getting a new dungeon with 11.1, and another with 11.2. Those two dungeons are the replacement for the mega dungeon.
I’m playing Pantheon rn. It’s an absolute mess graphically with only 2 dungeons, but damn is the social experience amazing.
I’ve made more friends I play with daily over there in a week than I have in WoW in 2 expansions.
WoW just isn’t worth making friends anymore. Outside of PvP the guilds are hyper political with ridiculously strict rules, the achievements feel pointless cus no clout.
6 dudes hanging out in the forest grinding XP together sharing war stories on their MMO past has been the peak MMORPG experience for me this year.
That’s where I searched for the link for the replacement content from.
It’s just below what you quoted.
Problem is, to do that they’d just have to accept that the big rambling dungeon won’t ever be used for M+, and I don’t think they’ll ever make one like that again.

I’d rather have more short dungeons anyways than one big mega dungeon. 3 bosses or less, tells a quick story, and tightly tuned (e.g., not filled to the brim with dangerous casts/cast spammers like EVERYTHING this season). Also, if it can be done in m+ in less than 20 minutes, even better.

Sounds like you ran into some guilds that didn’t fit you, which is natural when people are permitted to curate their own spaces.
As a related aside though, a shrinking MMORPG genre on top of the phenomenon you mentioned is why we need things like delves and follower dungeons to be further developed. It’s becoming increasingly unreasonable to gate any sort of important story content behind “go form a group.”
As an autistic STEM professional I agree with this. For me finding a guild after my long term one from TBC died in BfA has been impossible because it’s like they’re all either far left or far right with no proper understanding of societal cohesion.
WoW being so huge for so long has gotten it to basically mimic social media in personality divisions.

Yup, m+ continuing its path of ruining the game once again.

I mean, it’s possible it will change but there is no reason that they’d base it off follower dungeons. That’d be like not having >1 boss per raid because of story mode raids.
I’m pretty sure some of my alts hate my other alts. It’d be nonstop trash-talking and griefing, just like M+ pugs today.

My alts are either family or are other IP tribute characters, so I’m going to have some wild crossovers if/when this feature arrives! Like… Solas from Dragon age next to Lae’Zel from BG3 haha!
And I’ll totally voice all the banter!
