the problem was it was their biggest and only real announcement at BlizzCon. they would have been better off announcing they were doing a new diablo, then in a couple weeks made a post saying they were also developing a mobile diablo game to tide people over until the real game was ready.
Except that it does reek of creator-user disconnect. If they had bothered to read the room, they would have known that Blizzcon is attended primarily by PC gamers who have zero interest in phone games and that the Diablo fanbase is particularly hungry.
It wasn’t what their audience wanted to be sold, and it backfired. It was a PR mistake, and “do you not have phones” was a very bad way to address it.
I agree, though I felt bad for the guy more than anything as he was met with a hostile audience and failed to try to break the tension that way
