TL; DR: This game is as tedious as work and everything the developers put out shows that they only want to maximize the time it takes to do anything without being fun anymore. Legion had 7 months of no flying. BfA is stretching that to 11.
The long version:
I rolled my first character, what I consider my main (named Bluelaker then, currently named Censored), during the Black Temple patch in Burning Crusade, 2.1, in the summer of 2007. I have played every expansion since. I have leveled every class up to max and keep them leveled to max. For BfA, I have 6 of 12 at max so far.
When Blizzard introduced WoW tokens, I started using my in-game gold to pay for my subscription. For BfA, I even used WoW gold to buy the expansion itself. For all intents and purposes, I don’t have to pay to play this game.
I have determined, however, that I no longer want to play this game, even if it’s free.
I have noticed the same thing that others have pointed out, that the development team has switched from trying to make a fun game that people want to play for the continued enjoyment to a game where it is harder to find and get to the fun things about the game, where they have manufactured methods of delaying players from getting from point A to point B, where the benefits of a majority of character rewards of the play are minimal and taken away to force players to work again to achieve the level of play they enjoyed before, where landscape features have been placed in such a way to force players to travel farther and longer and without any sense other than to increase the time it takes to play.
They are artificially and purposely stretching out the time it takes to do anything for the specific purpose of getting more money from paying players, without providing actual entertainment. On the contrary, that artificial obstruction by the developers is absolutely NOT entertaining.
They can claim until they are blue in the face that they don’t want flying because they want the game to be more immersive and want more interaction, but the reality is that they don’t want you getting around faster, because faster gameplay equals less money for them based on the limited amount of content they want to have to provide.
As of 8.2, they are taking away the Water Strider water walking ability but saying that they are allowing any mount to walk on water with Mount Equipment, and besides they are adding in flying with 8.2 so, isn’t that a win for everyone? No. Because, from now on, even when the next expansion comes out and flying is not permitted again for however long they can stretch it out before people start canceling their subscriptions, you won’t be able to have anti-daze plus water-walking, which you can have right now. Daze being another mechanic they abuse to make it take longer for you to get around.
Every day I play I encounter some artificial tactic where they force me to take longer to get to the things I want to do to enjoy the game. Like flight points positioned where they require an additional long run (often in a big half circle) to get to a World Quest location. Huge areas without flight points, like the bottom half of Vol’dun. Flight Points that can’t be accessed without having quested an entire area. Using a Flight Whistle and ending up at a flight point I can’t even fly out of!!!
And then there is the direction they have taken that makes the game like a job where I have to pay my boss to work. There was even an article where the Blizzard employee was describing how people would log in and do the daily tasks to keep them progressing that sounded exactly like managers at a job. The daily tasks were busy work that weren’t fun, like farming Azerite Power. Island Expeditions are a joke. Zero fun. Battlefronts are a joke. Even if they make it so you can theoretically lose, it’s just a time waster. There is only one outcome. It’s a scripted event that you just sleepwalk through. But you waste those 20 minutes for the possibility of a piece of gear. And many times, you are getting a random piece of gear. I might have one level 400 piece of gear, a helm, and I do a battlefront and get another 400 helm. I just wasted 20 minutes of my time and got nothing for it!
I’m not going to keep going.
I’m done with World of Warcraft because they’ve replaced it with World of Repetition and Boredom. Work of Warcraft.
Not even the carrot of flying in the next patch (with no release date) is enough to keep me, because I know they are just going to take it away as soon as the next expansion drops. Plus, flying became available in Legion in patch 7.2 on March 28, which was seven months and 2 days after the release of Legion. Now, in BfA, we are already NINE months and 19 days into the expansion, with no actual release date announced for 8.2. Plus, even with Wowhead’s anticipated late June/early July release and the 2-3 weeks they figure it will take to get BfA Pathfinder Part 2 completed, I couldn’t anticipate flying until ELEVEN MONTHS into BfA.
Sorry, I’m not waiting anymore. I’m not doing it their way anymore.
I have already downloaded a couple of other games and have others queued up on Steam to play after.
Not going to play this game anymore.
Not even for free.
Bye.
