I think he got self-conscious about hammers after Legion when the Farseer grabbed Doomhammer and instantly had a stronger connection that he ever did.

He was a Shaman. He had a magic Shaman hammer. Because it was magic and shamanistic, not because it was a Hammer.
Now he is a Warrior (look at his Abilities in the Maw). Now he needs a weapon purely for ROFLSTOMPing. In that situation, he prefers an axe.
Though I imagine if he had found a Hammer he would have accepted it too. He just didn’t want a sword… Or a crossbow lol

Thrall rerolled to warrior. He wanted to be op.
It’s not “sudden”, he’s used axes for an even longer time. Look at Escape From Durnholde in TBC (he immediately grabs the axe out of all the other weapons in the room), and his entire time before that as Blackmoore’s gladiator.
