I Did a Bad Thing . .

I was doing dailies in Mechagon, and I while I thought I was familiar with all the pets on Mechagon—looked them all up on Xu-Fu and saw none of them were used in any significant number of strats—this was one I hadn’t seen before.

Fine. I’ll catch it and look it up later. After I caught it, I got berated by someone for taking “his” pet. It seems he had spent a lot of time over the last two days trying to make it spawn, and I swooped in and grabbed it just when it finally popped for him.

Unfortunately, it’s not cageable, so I couldn’t give it to him. And releasing it would simply ensure that no one gets it. Sigh.

Evidently, Yellow Junkhopper takes a bit of effort before it will spawn. And I just ruined it for someone.

I told him I was sorry and I didn’t realize it took so much work to get the pet to spawn. Unfortunately, that did little to placate him.

Well, it wasn’t like you did it on purpose, so no reason to feel bad about it.

Hopefully the other player can get it to spawn again soon.

But yes, getting that pet to spawn can be a bit tedious. It took me quite a while to get mine. I tried both in and out of the dungeon to find a spawn.

Had I done what I normally do, and simply noted the name of the pet to look up later, the guy would have had his pet. But I was bored with all the dailies on Mechagon and anxious to see them done, I decided to break with custom and grab this one.

Worse, it’s used in only two strats on Xu-Fu. With that information, I probably would have ignored it if it were a commonly appearing pet.

Or I might have collected it. There are less than 25 battle pets with the Feign Death ability, and Yellow Junkhopper is the only aquatic pet with this ability.

It really sucks that someone can do all this work to get a pet to spawn, but that pet is in the open world and is fair game to someone like me who can just happen to fly by.

The Yellow Junkhopper can spawn as a capturable pet in the (Operation: Mechagon) instance as well, and if you enter the portal solo there’s no competition.

And if it doesn’t spawn, leave the instance, reset instances, and try again.

I guess that player didn’t research that pet very well.

Exactly what I did. It didn’t take many resets either. I remember doing the pet dungeons to get the tokens to buy the pets associated with each dungeon being far more of a grind than the little yellow guy from Mechagon.

You mean Operation: Mechagon? Or do you mean the Chromie instance? I don’t remember seeing pets in either instance.

Going inside the dungeon and heading to where the Alliance flight point (along shore) would be outside the instance.

There are 7 pets in Operation: Mechagon. See list

Unless these pets are dropped by mobs, there are no pets to be had in Operation Mechagon. I’m in there now.

Odd, I have never had issues finding wild caught pets to battle in the dungeon, especially in the deeper areas.

There are usually 2 or 3 easily capturable in the green areas neat the entrance.

You can exit the dungeon, reset, and re-enter to get a new random selection.

Other pets are further down past a couple of bosses,

They don’t spawn every time you enter the instance. That’s why the instructions of resetting the instance if you don’t see what you want.

Four resets, four re-entrances.

Still nothing. I’d hope that the Devs would realize that putting battle pets inside instances is about the worst idea imaginable, but then I would have to conclude that I would be the first person to discover this, since there was no announcement in patch notes, nothing on Wowhead and you guys would all be unaware of this.

Highly unlikely.

But rather than keep on trying, since this is availing me nothing, I took up the trouble to look the pets on the list. Based on the number of strats these pets are used for on Xu-Fu, all of these pets would be of extremely low value, with the exception of the Clanking Scrapsorter, which is used in 39 strats.

Alloyed Alleyrat is used in two strats.
Copper Hopper is used in two strats.
Duskytooth Snooter is used in three strats.
Experimental Roach is used in eleven strats.
H4ND-EE is used in zero strats.
And Yellow Junkhopper is used in two strats.

So, for the most part, they’re valueless junk anyway.

ETA: I just now went in for the sake of giving it one more try and I found an H/P Experimental Roach. It’s blue, too. And it has a Clanking Scrapsorter in it’s backup.

Insert eyeroll here.

Depends on how you define “value” in pet battles.

I’m a collector, so every +1 is worth it. If you’re focusing on building an maximally effective fighting stable, that changes the calculus a lot.

On a tangent, I remember a player swooping in to kill Loq, a rare hunter tame and a major vanity pet. That one hurt.

Personally, I’m astonished anyone berated you for playing your game.

If I’m never going to use it, I don’t care to see it. Or waste the time and stones to level it and make it rare.

But of course, Pet Battles in WoW actually favor your preferences over mine.

There are some useful pets that you will never acquire unless you’re willing to acquire some useless pets. My favorite example is Mr. Bigglesworth.

There are a dozen pets I had to collect in order to get Mr. Bigglesworth. Some of them, like Anubisath Idol and Chrominius, are great pets to have. But the value of most of the others lies solely in the fact that collecting them allows me to get Mr. Bigglesworth.
