I can't understand Mastery for Frost

Aside from the fact that this again demonstrates how neglected mage is by these druid loving dev jerkoffs, I see both icy veins and noxxic say that mastery is the most important stat for a frost mage, but I can’t understand it at all. We get 5 icicles no matter what and mastery only increases the damage of frozen orb, which in itself is truly outrageous considering how mastery buffs other classes’ skills.

Anyway, this makes no sense to me to stack mastery for a skill that you can only cast once per minute and need to get lucky to hit anything. It seems so counterintuitive.

That’s because mastery also increases icicle damage, and it increases the damage added into GS which we can force crits on. Effectively, mastery can be the difference between 100k GS crits and 280k GS crits

Ahh OK thank you, the skill description is a little vague.

If you DON’T play glacial spike, then mastery is pretty much garbage for you. If you do it’s incredibly important.

It feels less fun taking glacial spike, especially since I feel forced to take splitting ice for the 90 talent as well. I really can’t understand why mastery doesn’t buff the basic skills frostbolt, ice lance, and flurry. It seems like an exception for the worse just for mage compared to other classes.

IIRC they changed it into Icicles becauae it was a ‘balancing nightmare’ in pvp. It originally increased damage to frozen targets. Then they had the idea for ot to increase frost damage, but that is exactly what Frost DK’s have so they didn’t want to have two of the same mastery’s.
