I can't decide on a race for Rogue (Alliance)

Can’t decide what I want to play. Lore matters to me but looks matter most. Rogue is my favorite class, but I don’t play one because I can’t decide on an Alliance race.

Animations, armor looks, etc. matter a lot for me because it can break immersion a bit if it looks… stupid. But I also need something that, lorewise, is going to make sense. I RP, so. But I have a hard time with random or weird race/class combos. So far, I like Human, Void, Nelfs, Kul Tirans, and Worgen- from a lore perspective or also in terms of looks and flavor. For the most part anyway.

I’ll list out my issues with them though. Maybe typing it out in a public space will help me work it out on my own but I’m open to opinions.

  • Human: Vanilla. I mean, you can never go wrong. Their lore is there, probably more than any other race, and not to mention all armor is going to look good on them, since it’s modeled on them. But the issue with them is… they’re a bit boring? They’re human; I’m human. I don’t want to play myself honestly, but their lore and flexibility makes them a big contender. Their racials are kind of nice too, the 2% isn’t going to change much but it’s nice. Then the 10% rep increase is nice too, especially if you’re farming mogs and stuff that are rep locked.

  • Void Elf: New? Yes. Cool looking? Yep. Armor looks good? Mhm. Lore? Eh, not a lot, but there’s the Ghostblades and whatnot, plus you could always say they were operatives or whatever before they went into the void looking for Alleria. But, they’re just Alliance Blood Elves… kind of like humans in that they’re a little boring? But they look awesome. And as a mog fiend the discounted transmogrifications are pretty dope. But other than that their racials, for a rogue at least, are almost useless.

  • Night Elf: Basically, all the same pros as human, but also all the same cons. Their racials are slightly better than human, in terms of stat bonus and whatnot, but racials mean almost nothing anymore- but Shadowmeld is pretty great. But why do I need two vanishes? Meh. I also already have a Nelf Druid and Demon Hunter, and I like for all of my characters to be unique and individuals of their own if that makes sense. Also, for some reason when I think of a Night Elf I don’t think of a rogue. I think of a Druid or a priest(ess), or obviously a Demon Hunter.

  • Kul Tiran: Big, mean and beefy. This is my least favorite out of the group honestly. They would make amazing outlaws, but other than that I’m not a big fan. Leather armor looks awful on them, not to mention they’re so emotionless. I personally feel they are the most half-baked allied race, just because of the lack of anything for them that adds flavor as a race. But their lore, as pirates and whatnot, is pretty sweet. Not to mention you can easily just say that they were a part of SI:7 or something. The female models are fine, but again they’re emotionless and flavorless, especially as rogues. I’ll have to be honest here and say that I haven’t seen them in action all that much- I usually check animations and whatnot using the dressing room.

  • Worgen: This is the race I want to like the most, but I just can’t. Werewolves are awesome, they’re my favorite folk tale in any setting. But, Worgen in WoW are just so weird looking. Half the time armor looks good on them, not great, and other times it makes you laugh because they look so ridiculous. And even more often than not you may as well mog a helm to hidden, because good lord. For example, just go to the dressing room and select a male Worgen and equip the Terrorblade Battlegear. Do it. Please. And look at the helm. Take it off and they actually look cool! Minus the lack of shoes. I also can’t stand the yelping they do when in combat, and I just don’t like the way they look in combat, personally.

I’m sorry, most of this is me rambling, and it’s not really a constructive conversation or anything, but I’d enjoy some opinions. I am not saying none of these races make good rogues, or that they should be barred because their lore is weird or whatever, I just get really invested and I need it to be perfect. I don’t have time to check them all on a trial character or whatever. I also understand this is all subjective, but I like hearing what others think.

Anyhow, thanks!

You could get on the beta or PTR and try them out before committing.

If you like to role play, I suggest Night Elf or Worgen. I think they have interesting lore and history.

Prepatch comes.

It’s Tauren full stop!

Or High mountain tauren.

Got a dash stun or aoe stun.

Herbing or mining buff
Ones crit dmg
Ones versitility buffed.

And with more sin buffs oh I’m so hyped to be the assassin tauren I always dreamed of but had to settle for feral since Burning crusade >:(

I know you didn’t mention it at all but, considering you mentioned that animations matter to you: female pandaren have the best melee combat animations and the most underrated stealth animation in the game (people go on and on how good the female blood/void elf stealth animation is; yeah, they crouch when they stand still while stealth. When they walk while stealthed they sway in a very exagerated manner, how do they not dislocate a hip? Anyway) and rogue leather looks really good on a female pandaren.

Of the ones you mentioned, I’d go with either night elf or Worgen (just slap an eye patch on them, fixes a lot of the transmog issues) who also have an amazing stealth animation.

I put a lot of stock on stealth animations for rogue/race combos. You spend tons of time in stealth. You gotta not hate how it looks. I have a rogue on horde, this guy went from blood elf to female blood elf to pandaren to goblin, and that’s where I gave up. Wasn’t gonna play that character all that much anyway.

Go void elf

Night Elf Rogues are very thematic for role players. That is why BE, VE and NE are common on role play realms.

So NE or VE would work for what you are looking for.

:surfing_woman: :surfing_man:

Look at me, and tell me I’m not buff and got that extra stuff. It’s in your heart all along, you know what you must do now.

Human is the best for me- already have a story with SI 7, most gear looks great on them and just feels right.

Worgen I just can’t get into why a warewolf would need to use daggers when he has sharp claws, elves are just too common and Kul Tiras are just too fat and clumsy to role play unless you spec only outlaw in which case it may make some sense .

I think humans have the most lore for any rogue race. Worgen are decent. Night elves have cool animations. Void elves bottom tier.

Seem ter be missin’ the best race in that list o’ yours

If you’re playing outlaw then shadowmeld gives you an extra ambush meaning an extra free rtb buff that you can extend with keep it rolling. IMO nelf is a huge upgrade

The void elf racial are actually strong, especially in pvp. The teleport allows you to kite or prevent kiting. Takes some practice, but a nice new toy. The shadow damage buff triggers pretty frequent on my alt. So to have a nice 5% buff constantly is nice. The leech with healing helps a tad, not sure if it makes up a huge amount over the long haul.

To help you think about the choices, I will list my pros/cons for each race. Bear in mind, most of this will be from a PvP perspective. Also, a lot of attack animations were made the same, per class, in WoD. It isn’t as diverse as it was prior( was a huge fan of Belf finishers with fist weapons lol).

Humans - Love every man for himself, sad to see it was nerfed, still should be reverted back to its old self. The bonus rep gains are great ( especially for me, I hate farming rep.)
Dwarves - Stone racial is great to prevent bleeds from killing you or breaking stealth. Sometimes sick beards. Drink alot.
Gnomes/mecha gnomes - should be eradicated. I will admit, gnomes have a good heritage armor.
Night elves, decent animations overall, think females have it better than male counter parts. Shadowmeld is great in theory, but easily countered in PvP. Bonus crit is nice for PvE.
Worgen - Puppies :D. With claw fist weapons transmog, auto attacks look like your just swipes with your claws, I enjoy this. Nice racial for speed and transformation, sadly some transmogs don’t go well with our legs or head. Enjoyable overall.
Void elves- Good models, works with almost every transmog, nice animations. Racials are great overall. The 3m teleport takes some practice, but has good applications for raid and PvP. Overall, I give 4/5.
Draeni - Nice story and cool animations, I like the ideas of their racials, but feel they are little weaker, they do help out in PvE in moments where rogue needs a boost to healing.
Light forged - see previous…
Kul tiran - I love their racials, just punching things off edges. Made some nice enemies in pvp. Healing passive is nice, but feels like it does not impact(makes sense, or it could be easily overpowered). I am not the biggest transmog fan for these guys, but you can still find some good ones.
Dark iron - See dwarves but with fire! Racial clears dots and gives nice boost, great for damage in PvP, haven’t used it much in pve.
Pandas- Meh, not a fan but love the lore.

Hope this helps you in your decision. Happy pick pocketing.

Alliance wise I’d say 100% night elf. They gain 5 percent extra movement speed while stealth. 2% movement speed in general, 2% extra change to dodge melee and ranged. Shadowmeld is huge. It is a free stealth without the need of using vanish, or st the very least using a stealth attack like silence garrote for example.

Female gnome. Animations are good. Feels nice. Racial for roots removal is handy.

Ever since I watched St George III PVP back in TBC, I can’t play anything but female gnome rogue. The jump spin is great.
