If it had a 2 min cooldown. Go ahead and make that change. I think most shaman would agree with that.
Ankh is going to be awful as long as we continue to lose all our buffs when we die.
Ya ever wonder why Blizz didnât look at the ability to self rez and go âHmm maybe we can give this to more classes other than Lock and Shaman?â
Because it is a trash mechanic. Honestly I never caught the Ion interview when it happened back in the day, but tbh Iâm appalled that any designer could look at something so brutally situational in its usefulness and go âYeah this is good enough the class doesnât need any other defensive.â
Reincarnation is not a defensive, its a crutch, its your get out of jail free card because you made a mistake, but at no point in time has the player base ever considered reincarnation to be a âpowerful defensiveâ.
Reincarnationâs painfully obvious faults are as such:
-
Right out the gate it canât be used in any form of rated PvP anymore (during Cata you could use it inside Rated Battleground) this makes it worthless to any PvPer.
-
Using Reincarnation comes with the obvious downside of losing all your cooldowns you may have had rolling when died and any buffs you had. This makes members of your raid have to waste GCDs to buff you when they should be doing damage.
-
Even with the hp being brought back up to 40% when you ankh reincarnation still revives you at a low enough % that youâll more than likely die right away again if a healer doesnât baby you. Which just hinders the healers for no reason.
-
You can often, as blizz boss design has progressed over the years with âlethal ground fireâ mechanics becoming more prevalent, end up not being able to even USE reincarnation because your surrounded by puddles of death making a brez have to be wasted on you because you couldnât survive the mechanic everyone else did.
-
It means we unjustly punish the healers by existing as we tax their mana pools due to the higher volatility of our healthpools even in PvE content as only having one defensive means we take excessively more damage than other classes.
-
Using Reincarnation is just the ultimate feeling of shame. It means you messed up, it means that when the group misses a dps window you know its because you died, and it doubles on the shame when you die because you already had to use Astral Shift and have no other form of defense against a boss/mob mechanic and you canât reincarnate because you already died before.
Ion please my man realize that reincarnation is not a defensive, take a step back, and actually look at the reality that Enhancement as a melee is the squishiest and easiest to train melee in the game by miles.
Nope, it needs more than that. It might sounds good on paper but in game its garbage and most likely you just instantly die again.
Still donât agree. Dying isnât a defensive. Not too mention you donât retain buffs. Canât be used in arena either.
I love having Reincarnation as a potential way to save a wipe. I donât see how they can consider it a defensive ability since defense is meant to prevent damage or death.
Insert a long winded ideology explanation from Ion that doesnât answer any questions here
So in another thread it was brought up that Ion and the team did not want the shaman to be weak. I linked the twitter video and the same person that said Ion and the combat team did not want shamans to be weak said. It was brought up we should not derail the thread about a different topic I agreed and brought it here in the Ankh thread.
âI donât think thereâs anything wrong with saying that reincarnation is a powerful ability. It is. Being able to screw up a mechanic or what not and then pop back up again is a great ability. Yes there are drawbacks, but I think this witch hunt over his comment about reincarnation being strong is unjustified.â
This is there quote.
I watched the twitter video again and typed out everything Ion said in the video.
To quote Ion
âI think we are pretty happy overall with the shaman defensive tool kit. Asteral shift as a talent is a very powerful ability. As well as a couple of other things they can spec into. And as far as reincarnation goes resto currently has a trait that helps with that. But for everybody its an incredibly powerful ability its a second chance at life and timing poping back up around whats going on in the encounter is just part of the skill using it.â
These are Ions words exactly as they are in the video. So they removed SR and healing wolves. They consider ankh as one of our defensives.
Yup. I was defending Ion and Blizzard because I think this whole obsession with his ankh comment is totally overblown, a waste of time, and not constructive. I highly doubt he intended it the way it is being characterized.
He never said ankh is our primary defensive. He didnât actually even call it a defensive per se. Pretty sure neither Ion nor the rest of the combat design team think that ankh is why shaman should be weak defensively, particularly in PvP where it doesnât even work.
All he said is that ankh is a powerful ability. It sounds like in the video that he is responding to a specific question about it and about the fact that you reincarnate at low health and is talking to the situational nature of using it at the right time so as not to to die again.
I donât think thereâs anything wrong with his comment saying that reincarnation is a powerful ability. It is. Being able to screw up a mechanic or what not and then pop back up again is a great ability. Yes there are drawbacks, but I think this witch hunt over his comment about reincarnation being strong is overblown, unjustified and pointless and is based on a mischaracterization of what he said and the context he was saying it in.
A separate - constructive - conversation would be to just focus on why shamanâs need defensive help and what form that should take. But fretting over this ankh comment from years ago is pointless and, imo, not even justified.
Anyone thatâs read my posts should be able to appreciate that I think enhance is far from perfect and that there are definitely deserved criticisms to be leveled at blizzard about enhance, particularly w/respect to PvP and survivability. I just donât think this is one of them.
If we are crippled by reincarnation, I vote they remove all Warlock defensives to equally cripple them.
At least that way 2 class forums pointing out its flaws are more likely to be heard.
Cancel IonâŚhe has overseen the worst wow expansions in the history of the game and needs to no longer be in charge of wow.

Should be adapted to be similar to Cheat death / Cauterize / etc. SoâŚ
5 min CD, usable in all content including Arena. Must use within 10 sec of death in PvP settings.
Would actually be good.
Mmmphh yeaaaaa, oooh boiâŚI could âŚmmmphâŚreally get behind that.
I agree his ineptitude has lasted long enough.
They could start by making it better:
- Retain any buffs
- Invulnerable âorâ have like 80% DR for a couple of seconds
- Let out a burst of AOE healing
- Movement speed increased
- Let it work in PvP
Not saying everything but there are major issues:
- Spawning with no buffs hurts
- Spawning in a bad position with low health and normal MS is often just instant death
- You are not healing others for a significant period
- Not working in PvP makes it a dead talent
i think the main point of a defensive is to be⌠defensive? idk about you but dieing is not defensive.
most of us want some sort of added armor/shield/passive healing
No way! People took someone out of context and took that quote in the worst possible light? And then reacted poorly to their bad information.
Yep. Stay classy wow forums.
This is productive. Letâs fire this guy because I donât like his design of a highly profitable game.

Is Ankh a talent?
I believe bubble is refering to ancestral protection totem which gives a random raid member âreincarnationâ as a brez, but as its a brez it doesnât work in pvp thus is worthless.
