The new login verification (walrus images) seems entirely broken.
First attempt allowed me to try and login without a passord (having been taken off gurad by this “improvement”) which failed. The second and subsequent logins tell me I’ve made too many attempts.

Thank you for removing the walruses, walri… it is greatly appreciated that I’m now a gnome again.
They’re back (as well as the wibbly wobbly letter string when direct loading a game client) and neither is letting me in again for "too many attempts - 51900314.
I’ve had the same “too many attempts” error. I was able to fix the problem by rebooting my computer or restarting my router. Making another login attempt and restarting the launcher did nothing. It seems to be related to the new walrus capcha and stale connections, evident in the launcher menu items being grayed out.
Immediately prior to each incident, I also had a failed game launch from the character select. It’s like it loaded me in with no data, then messages me: disconnected from the server.
This is a particularly hard problem to remedy, given the forums no longer have an independent login from the game. If you come to the forum for help, the walrus follows you here. You can’t post messages if you can’t login. This wasn’t how it always was. If you had a login problem, you could always come here for help.

Until yesterday I’ve never seen anything other than username/password on either the launcher or game client so it was entirely mystifying.
Yesterdays second fail was while the launcher was till logged in, and after having exited the game for a short while. There didn’t/doesn’t seem to be any specific period of time related to the exit period as I have done this for far longer both before and since yesterdays incedents.
Regardless, this method of verification has beed rubbish since it was first invented but seems to have capcha’d the attention of the lazy in charge of the worlds IT security.
This is getting seriouisly tedious. Logging in for the first time 7+ hours I get deer verification this time (makes it sooo much better) and it of course fails with too many attempts (1 is too many it seems).
The problem is back. This time I got a frog.
Every time the animal capcha initiates, it will result in the “too many attempts” 51900314 bug even on the first attempt.
It could be something as stupid as the verification tool not aligning the correct pic with the right window, resulting in a failed verification even after choosing the right pic. That would be grounds to cancel the contract with a vendor if ever I saw one.
This time, restarting my computer and router didn’t fix it.
Eventually, the verification went through and prompted me to authenticate and I got in.
This is ridiculous. The fact that people can’t log into the forums while having this issue is probably an indicator that thousands more have the same issue.
I’ve not had any problems posting on the forum because of this so something even more random is happening if that’s what you are getting.
It at least worked today so, eerrr thanks I guess.
Having to do the test twice shows just why this is a pointless exercise. If a bot can beat it once, it can do it a second time so no gain other than to frustrate real cusomters by wasting their time making sure of their choices.
The string of mashed up letters(numbers) is just a way worse version of the pictures.
Only had to find the correct walrus once and authentication was successful… progress (for now)
This is still happening. Too many attempts on first attempt, which locks you out for 20 mins or more from logging in. I had to wait and restart my computer multiple times. I can’t believe I’m the only one with this problem.
Must be nice to not have to hear about problems until they are fixed… since you can’t log onto the forums since it’s the same login tool.
I had it happen again yesterday so I checked my VPN. One of the split tunneling settings had been wiped at some stage so authentication requests were going via that VPN which might be the cause of the problem.
Given the eratic nature of the problem I can’t say for certain without at least a couple of days to see what happens. Although the change from having to do the check twice down to once seems to indicate Blizzard were/are tinkering with it as well.
It never stopped me accessing the forums.
Happened again today, just as I was supposed to be forming raid for our Sire kill.
It wouldn’t let me onto the launcher. I was able to get onto the forums for the first time during this problem, after authenticating. After that, I was able to get into game.
I just wanted to pop in and mention that there’s not any need to continually update this thread. The captcha can and will pop up when it needs that extra verification that you are you. Any changing of the pictures within the captcha isn’t because you posted here - it’s just a coincidence.
Best of luck.
Goo goo g’joob.
I’m trying to determine the cause and if it’s me or not. Well that and mentioning what I think of the actual process itself if it is something that is new.
The changing of the number of times the verifcation process is run before the verify button is activated as opposed to a change in the actual pictures that are displayed would seem to be a decision rather than a random program choice.
But thank you for your expertise, they are greatly appreciated.
Just to finish out, it does appear VPN related as the same just happend with TBC (well, no Capcha but mutiple disconnects on launch) and cleared when I added that to the split tunnel settings.
It’s back!
Every other day, I have to go through a bunch of hoops just to get logged in. It can take 30 minutes to recover when this bug happens.
This is UNACCEPTABLE. I have a guild and raids to lead. I have over 300 players counting on me.
Is it really too much to ask to be able to log into the game I am subbing to?
We’re beginning mythic raids. Also every time I have this problem, my logs are broken.
This security “feature” is more trouble than it’s worth.
The picture used is irrelevant. I could care less what pic they use.
The problem as clearly stated is the “too many attempts” on the first attempt.
I will continue to voice my concerns and the specifics of my problem until it no longer exists.
You’re welcome.
I’m simply trying to save people needless frustration and wasted time. Continually updating the same thread with the same information isn’t productive to getting your problem noticed; developers who would implement a change to the login procedures don’t frequent the tech support forums for suggestions.
If the problem were more widespread - such as many other people responding with the same issue instead of just two people - it might gain more attention. The fact that the support forums aren’t awash with complaints means the problem probably is not affecting that many users.
Either that, or most people just solve the captcha and move on. Doing that may be your best course of action. Either that, or turn off your VPN*
If you feel this is a bug, posting in Bug Report would be the best course of action.
If you need troubleshooting, we could attack that angle, but the first thing anyone is going to need you to do is shut off your VPN and see if the problem persists. VPNs, while allowed, aren’t supported, which to the layperson means you must accept weird, strange behavior when using one.
*(If you aren’t using a VPN, then starting a different thread for your unique problem would be better than updating this thread. You aren’t experiencing the same problem as the OP.)
If acknowledging player technical issues is frustrating for them, they need a new job
I assume they are implementing different fixes to the problem. We have no way of knowing because they give zero feedback. I am assuming the best here.
Given that generous assumption, they will need to know if their fixes actually work. I am telling them whether they do or not. In that, these updates are neither the redundant nor irrelevant. They are in fact critical to them sorting out the root issues.
There are less risky ways to resolve authentication issues. This is a ridiculous suggestion. I don’t need to expose my computer to internet cooties in order to gain access to the product I purchased.
I seriously don’t understand why you are criticizing me for reporting a problem. I am not the problem here, the authentication system is. Furthermore, you have no dog in the fight. Do you just troll the technical forums for uniformity and order? You are just annoyed that I didn’t report my legitimate on-going problem in the way you like.
Seriously, if you have nothing to offer to help, please don’t reply. It’s one thing to weigh in on an opinion thread. This is a technical one. Frustrated players come here to get resolution. You give them grief over how they report it.
