Suppose someone had a week off from work and jumped into PvP, playing all day everyday and ending up with 750k-1m honor his first week. Would he be screwing himself for the future assuming he returns to a full time job the next week and may only crank out 150-200k honor going forth, taking honor decay into consideration? Ideally you should be playing progressively more to rank up, right? Naive question but first time around I started in wotlk TIA
Yes, because of the way bracketing works.
It’s not very beneficial to blast out a boatload of honor then go back to a more regular level in succeeding weeks.
Far better to keep to a steady pace.
Edit: There is also a maximum number of ranks one can get in a week, no matter how much honor one accrues.
I THINK it is like 1.5 ranks or 1.9 ranks, something like that. I could be wrong. But there is a maximum.
You could not, say, gain 2 trillion honor in 1 week and go from rank 0-14 in one week.
There’s no point. You are capped at progressing a certain amount and if you go that high you could take away from other people. It’s all kind of hard to explain but there are calculators online that will show you what you get.
You wouldn’t be screwing yourself necessarily, you would have just gotten a bunch of honor that didn’t really help your rank anyway at rank 1. So more a waste of time if all you care about is ranking as opposed to hurting yourself.
1.9 sounds right because I went from rank 1 to rank 3 on 100k honor and 3 to 5 the following week on 200k
Okay so the way honor/ranks works is, there’s a set of 14 brackets every week. The #1 person gets 13000 rank points.
So theoretically, you can jump from rank 1 to rank 4 your first week if you’re near the top of the brackets. That doesn’t matter as much right now because sustaining that kind of pace early in your rank grind will only burn you out fast.
The problem is you face a 20% decay in rank points every week.
So you want to go at a moderate pace (probably around 200-300k honor per week on most servers) until you’re close to rank 10-11 at which point you’ll need to step it up and start pushing for higher brackets.
If you’re near the top of bracket 11 for example (roughly the top 3-4% of players on your faction), then you will gain 10,000 rank points every week.
That’s around where 250-300k honor will get you on a lot of servers. If you do that, you’ll basically go from rank 1 to rank 9 in around 6 weeks.
If you take a slower pace around 150-200k as you’re saying, you’d probably be around bracket 9 or 10 on most servers (top 10%), so you’ll be gaining around 8000-9000 rank points per week.
In that case, you’d go from rank 1 to rank 8 in around 6 or 7 weeks. At that point, you’d need to push up to around 250-300k honor per week to push up to rank 10 in the next 3 weeks.
Not really worth starting your rank fully crazed. I did literally 4 battlegrounds and ended up at rank 2.85. Max you can get week 1 is like rank 4 so if I had just played the rest of that day and maybe the day after I’d be at the limit.
How much you’ll need to play later depends on what your goal is and also what the cap on your server is. Try to find a ranking discord for your server and download honor spy for this info. If you look at the bracket 1 people on honor spy, their “last week honor” will probably be around the cap (600k on my server).
Once you take a certain bracket, you need to maintain it or you just wasted your time getting it, unless you finish. Getting something like:
br14 > br10 > br10 > br10 (28616 rp total, 22893 if you don’t finish that fourth week)
is less total progress than
br10 > br11 > br11 > br11 (29008 rp total, 23206 if you don’t finish that week)
No you’ll be fine because you can’t climb that much in the first few weeks
200k is plenty to keep climbing from rank 6 or wahtever
Now if that 700k gets you to rank 10+…depending on your server might just end up decaying. Alllll depends on your server
