Hunter has always been popular, and due to game mechanics, even after 7 rounds of nerfs they remain top DPS who stay mostly safe at range, as well as having unmatched leveling speed (next to AE Mages) and farming or soloing potential.
Fun is subjective. I’d suggest playing one and finding out for yourself, since you have every opportunity to have your own experience with the class.
I’ve got Mage, Druid, Hunter, and Warrior at 25 with Paladin behind at 18 and I will say Hunter is pretty darn fun. I still like Druid over it though.
It’s the easiest class to level, does great damage, has great solo ability, and has a simple rotation.
Also, they probably top the charts when it comes to forum activity. There’s several posts every single day complaining about hunters. When people see this, they may agree on the forums, but then go create one for themselves.
Almost all bots are hunters, which should tell you something about their gameplay.

Honestly if you’re playing anything but a Hunter right now, you only have yourself to blame. Seriously.

Hunter is the best ‘Solo’ class and requires the least amount of interacting with others.
Hence, it’s popularity.

I like warlock but the vanilla shard system is trash and unfun
Solo some part of rfk at lvl 25 is fun.
I use my hunter to help my other toons to get their runes, elite quests. It’s fun

Hunters have been and probably always will be the best solo class.
Eventually, your friends log off. So that’s why I feel like everyone has one.
And who doesn’t like easy famring early into a new thing™ ?
I played a hunter in classic from september 2019 to may 2022, no regrets
eventually i suppose i got bored of it and wanted to try something new
Not a big fan of the hunter playstyle. Standing still to fire off auto shots is lame.
