Hunter's No Longer Start with a Pet?

Hi all, got a quick question.

Edit": I found my issue, but thanks for the help all! It seems if you make a new, alt hunter and start in the original starting area of that race as opposed to Exiles’ Reach, you aren’t given a pet, and according to Blizzard, that’s intended. Makes logical sense, right? lol Regardless, found my answer and thanks all!

I just resubscribed after not playing for months. I made a worgen hunter, but wasn’t given a pet. At first I thought how Blizzard is constantly changing things, I would get a pet later and no longer got one from level 1. But I’m level 10 and still don’t have a pet and haven’t even came across a pet in Gilneas to tame. I was given a lot of pet abilities around level 4 or so. I have the “call pet” ability, but if I try to use this it says I don’t have a pet to call.

So here I hit level 10 and was given “call pet 2” and I can’t even call one pet yet. Am I bugged or what?

My game seems quite bugged in general. I don’t have a pet on my new worgen hunter and my orc shaman’s earthbound totem doesn’t even slow mobs half the time. Is the game in a very buggy state or just me having lots of issues? I know the game has always had bugs here and there, but never had as many issues as I am having right now.

I haven’t made a new hunter in years, so I can’t comment on whether that’s intended or not. Seems really unintuitive to give you those spells but no option to call or tame a pet.

According to a quick google search you should have gotten the tame pet ability at level 5 so you may need to go out and tame something.

Only allied races get a pet the rest of the races have to go tame their own now.

Thanks for the reply Orcus. I was just in the process of making a ticket in the game thinking I was bugged. As I was trying to find the proper section, I found my issue. It seems if you make a new, alt hunter and start in the original starting areas, (not in Exile’s Reach) for some crazy reason you aren’t given a pet and it’s intended Blizzard said.

Why you aren’t given a pet if you start in Gilneas as opposed to starting is Exile’s Reach is the oddest thing I have saw yet. But at least I now have my answer.

Exiles Reach is a leaning to play experience, if someone chooses so. Not sure if new players get the option to choose it or not.

Maybe Blizzard wants you to choose a pet of your own in the starter areas.

They don’t get access to allied races automatically, the new players would have to open them.

I have done Exile’s Reach a number of times. I much prefer the original starting areas so that’s what I do for all new character’s.

New players with a new account aren’t given the option to start in the original area’s until they have at least leveled one character to 50 if I remember right. You are forced into Exile’s Reach.

Regradless, I find it very odd that hunter’s aren’t given a pet unless they start in Exile’s Reach. I was given a call pet abilitiy, but I’m level 10 and haven’t came across one pet to tame yet. Meanwhile, I have tons of abilites for a non-existant pet lol. The game seriously seems so off-balance to me. More than I have ever saw it.

It doesn’t have anything to do with allied races either regarding the pet, according to the support article I found anyways from Blizzard. It’s all due to new hunter’s not being given a pet unless they start on Exile’s Reach. The article said it was “intended.”

Yeah, that is very vague. I can confirm that the original races did come with pets in Legion last I played until I came back here in 9.1.

I’m guessing they made the change when Exiles Reach came out. I would agree to be silly not to have original races to have their pets if not going to Exiles Reach.

Original pets that came from each race, before Blizz made the change:

Horde

Blood Elf : Dragonhawk
Tauren : Tallstrider
Orc: Boar
Undead: Spider
Goblin: Crab
Troll: Raptor

Pandaren: Turtle

Alliance

Drainei: Moth
Human: wolf
Gnome: Mechanical Rabbit
Worgan: Dog
Night Elf: Saber Cat
Dwarf: Bear

When I created my hunter, so many years ago, I clearly remember being given a quest to go and tame a pet as part of my leveling. I suspect that bit is still around but the actual leveling quests got lost or don’t exist for some races.

Or perhaps Blizzard figured that if you’re not a new player, you should know to tame a pet and couldn’t be bothered in giving a consistent experience to the players.

I started playing in early 2006, in Vanilla. Originally, you weren’t given a pet until level 10. There used to be a quest chain from the hunter trainer to learn to tame pets. I actually really enjoyed all those class quests. Those old quests have pretty much been removed over the years. Every now and then you find an old class quest, but most of the original ones are gone. The ones for druid’s to get their forms, hunter’s their pets, rogue’s to learn pickpocketing, poisons, etc.

That would be all well and good, and I’m sure most of us veteran player’s know how to tame a pet, but it’s quite annoying to be level 10 in an area and there isn’t a pet anywhere to even tame. I have tons of pet abilities and no pet and no pet to even tame anywhere. I have been trying to find one in Gilneas to tame since I was actually given the ability to tame around level 5. I know I will eventually come across a pet I can tame, but it’s quite silly to be a beast mastery hunter at level 10 with lots of abilities around pets and I don’t have one and can’t even tame one because none are around to tame.

I have to agree with you, that is annoying.

Unfortunately, it speaks volumes about Blizzard to fail its game design at all levels. I really have to wonder if they have any talent left on how to design games properly.

I’m beginning to suspect they felt it a waste of money as they had latched onto a formula that they could rinse and repeat with people who really don’t understand how these things really impact the gameplay.

It just feels like a jumbled mess unfortunately.

I think all the different changes that have been done to level scaling and the level squish has caused quite a few bugs and problems. I expect games to have some bugs here and there and it is what it is. But I have saw so many things in this game the last few years that are just a mess and it seems as if they truly no longer play their own game to see and fix these things.

I could make a list of things I have found, but don’t have time right now. But one example that I will give was an issue I came across months ago when I played. I was given a quest in Orgrimmar at level 10. I can’t remember the name of the quest, but it has you go around the city and gather a few different items. One of the items I couldn’t loot because it said I needed to be level 35 or 45 (can’t remember which level now) to loot it. I have came across a number of things like that the last year or so.

They really need to have someone fix all these issues scaling and the level squish has caused. So many mistakes and bugs, and the silly things like my hunter right now. My hunter issue isn’t major and as I said, I know I will eventually find a pet to tame, but it just doesn’t even make logical sense. But Blizzard has said this regarding hunter pets is intended, so ok. But the game in general is by far the buggiest I have ever saw it in all the years I have played.

I play mostly Vulpera. They are an allied race and start at level 10. Hunters start with a pet but i have to open the button that summons it to use it. Then I go to an area that has them and tame a spider. Love spiders.

Dark Iron Dwarf Hunters is the same thing.

playing horde I have had no problems finding pets for my new alt hunters at level 5. But because of my experience I know exactly what kind of pets I want and where to go to get them. New players have no choice but to start in Exiles Reach. Older players they gave the option knowing that older players who decided to play a hunter would be able to find their pets with no problems.

I have a nightborne hunter I made quite some time ago. Same as you, I was given a pet at level 10 on my nightborne.

You can’t just leave Gilneas (the worgen starter area) to find a pet and come back. The whole starter zone is instanced and phased like the goblin one. I could easily make a night elf, orc, troll, and numerous other races and easily find a pet to tame in Durotar, Teldrassil, Elwynn Forest or anywhere. This isn’t the case for Gilneas at all. There aren’t pets all over the place to tame. I haven’t been able to find even one to tame yet at level 10. They just don’t exist yet in the area I’m in.

I know that even eventually in Gilneas I will come across something to tame. But it just doesn’t make any logical sense to be a level 10 beast mastery hunter with all these abilities without a pet and no pet nearby to tame.

I actually found some mastiff dogs, but they were npc’s and not able to be tamed.

Now you got me curious, I’m going to start a worgan hunter and see what I can find for a solution.

Off to investigate!

Lol, good luck!

If you come across a pet I have somehow missed, let me know!

I do know I will eventually find something in Gilneas, I just haven’t yet. I just finished the part where you kill the forsaken on the ships and the dark ranger. So, I’m hoping I find something soon.

It’s not the biggest of deals, but it’s quite annoying

At level six I’ve earned the ability to tame, but there are no animals to tame until you have finished saving the drowning towns people. I found fox’s to tame in Crowley Orchard.

I do think that the crows should be made tamable so you have a pet when tame becomes available.

Mystery solved!

Ok, thanks Zenli!

I think I’m close to that part, so hopefully I will have a fox to tame soon. I’m pretty sure I remember there being some mastiff dogs you can tame somewhere in Gilneas also. This is the first time I have done the worgen starting area in a long time and they keep changing the game.

Fun fun! lol

There is a quest in Exiles Reach that has you tame your first pet. Other zones you just have to do it on your own. I find that more fun actually because I can tame what I want.
