To preface this, I have played Hunter for over 3 years in Vanilla content, and I have achieved server best and class best logs for fights in this raid, and am in conjunction with Hunters of similar experience to create the best comprehensive guide. Your Raid Leader may not like some positioning I have here, but Hunter’s are one of the only exceptions of standing in raids because we have resets like Feign Death, and more armor and health then other ranged classes like casters and healers. I in no way would give you this information if it put the raid in jeopardy. While I do cheese meters and put my own life at risk sometimes, this guide is used for progression through Molten Core and not farm raids, and its purpose is to HELP your raid not hurt, so tell your RL to shove it!
Here will be a neat post for Hunters for every boss in Molten Core. It will go over positioning, strategy, when to pop cooldowns, need to knows per boss, and how to maximize your output from every angle.
I have made this guide with the involvement of other Hunters on the server I play on who are in the best guilds on our server and rank in the top of the pserver community in logs. If there is anything I am missing or you feel is correct PLEASE hit me up and tell me, I am in no means an elitist or a shrewd person, this is made solely to help new Hunters because I wish this information was available when I was learning the class. I will put my Discord and BattleTag in the bottom if you’d wish to contact with more questions or information.
Lucifron:
Positioning: Pretty straightforward boss here, stand at max range so your multi-shots can hit all the adds, it’s not elitist or try hard because you have to eventually kill them anyway so, pad those meters while you can!
Cooldowns: Pop everything immediately. More damage on more targets instead of waiting until its the boss only you’re losing all that extra DPS from when the ads were up.
Magmadar:
Hunter Job: You will have to Tranquilizing Shot because he regularly enrages so on this fight just focus on that, unless of course you’re not in the rotation. As Hunter Class Leader to be safe make sure you use 3 Hunters here and number them. 1 and 2 are the basic rotation, create a macro or even just jump down a channel in Discord to be clear with each other. Hunter 3 is backup incase someone is feared or died and can jump in instantly to replace whoever missed their shot or died.
Positioning: Stay as far away as you can from the raid here, it will give less of a chance of getting fire under you, and you can pump more DPS.
Cooldowns: Right off the bat here, nothing special. If you are Hunter 1 on enrage then save them until after you use your Tranquilizing Shot. Don’t get a big head here! Your DPS doesn’t matter just be spamming that Tranquilizing Shot button when it is your turn and worry about the DPS later.
Gehennas:
Positioning: Stay as far away as possible again! Gehennas randomly casts Reign of Fire (just like the Warlock spell) on a random ranged target. You don’t want to be near anyone so you don’t have to move. Remember as a Hunter DPS - MOVING = LESS DPS!
Cooldowns: On this fight use them right off the bat. You want to be switching targets when multishot is up to hit the bulk of the adds, and switch back to gehennas for aimed shots. Cleave son! This fight is great for hunters to flex their Epeens.
Garr:
Positioning: Stick somewhere by the wall, in between Garr, and the location where they drag the adds. The adds blow up when they die so you want to be a safe distance away (more than 20 yards) and still in range of Garr and the other adds so you don’t have to move when switching targets. Do not get hit by explosions!
Cooldowns: Save until Garr appears, just because at this point you’ll be starting to fall down the meters and it will give you an extra boost. This fight is not a race! Especially your guilds first few times killing this it will be one of the longer fights and keeping mana throughout the fight is crucial, try and slow your rotation down a tad so when Garr comes out after the adds are dead you can go balls to the wall, on a plus side most other classes WILL be oom so this gives you a good chance to work your way up the meters.
Shazzrah:
Cooldowns: wait to use your cooldowns until after 80% or so, keep in mind that his threat drops when he teleports so you want to avoid over DPS’ing and pulling aggro. ATTENTION: Your Feign Death has a 1% miss chance because physical hit chance and spell hit chance are different for Hunters. So being capped on hit means you always have a base 1% more chance to miss your target with Feign Death since it is a spell cast, so don’t be so sure you will always drop threat as your Raid Leader might give you a stern scolding for this as it can cause a wipe, trust me, I learned the hard way.
Strategy: This fight is annoying for hunters because you will be fighting to stay under threat on KTM, so be regularly feign deathing on cooldown and try to use your CD’s when you are safe to do so.
Sulfuron Harbinger:
Positioning: This fight is a huge emphasis on position, if you can stay in a spot without having to move you will do leaps and bounds more damage, so you want to stay at a midpoint in between where the adds are dragged, and where the boss and unkilled ads are so you can use your multi shot on the group of adds and switch to aimed shot the add moved out of the group without moving. ---- Your group will stack the majority where the boss stands, and usually pull a priest add one by one out of LOS usually where you take the ramp down back to Golemagg or Shazzrah, so stand somewhere where they will not run through you to avoid the fire AOE and somewhere where you can shoot both the adds in the grouping and where they drag out the adds to kill one by one.
Cooldowns: At the beginning to maximize DPS
Golemagg the Incinerator:
Strategy: Stand still and DPS, don’t be in front of the core hounds, if your group is on farm and you want to cheese some meters, stand opposite from Golemagg and the core hounds and switch your multi shots to the core hounds Shhh don’t tell the pesky rogues, warriors and mages.
Ragnaros:
Positioning: Be on hunter isle, or generally anywhere not near people so you don’t get hit by the knockback, remember as a hunter - no movement = more DPS.
Strategy: Don’t worry about aggro here, ranged can’t pull off so go balls to the wall.
cooldowns: off the bat
Adds:
Stack on lava surgers for the love of god, everything else is pretty unimportant positioning wise, but the Lava Surger ads will wipe your group if all 40 of you do not stack, so don’t be that guy and always run up your DPS doesn’t matter here so enjoy not using your arrows.
Enjoy and make sure to let me know if there is anything you’d like to add that you notice.
