Hunters Are Shooting Chickens in Classic SOD — Why Can’t We Have That Fun in Retail?

Hello Retail Dev Team and Fellow Adventurers,

Years ago, I posted a request (linked here) asking for something I think many of us have quietly wanted for a long time: visual enhancements for bows, guns, and crossbows, similar to the enchant illusions melee weapons have enjoyed for years.

At the time, there wasn’t much movement on the idea—but now, thanks to Season of Discovery, you’ve given us something truly special:

The Poultry Precision Scope — a fun, flavorful, and visual weapon enhancement for Hunters.

Let’s talk about why this should be in Retail.

Why Poultry Precision Scope Is a Game-Changer

  • Visual and Auditory Flair: It adds a clucking sound to each ranged attack and literally turns your arrows into flying chickens. It brings personality and charm to your weapon like nothing before.
  • Toggleable Effect: You can turn the scope on and off using /chicken, giving players real control over their aesthetic.
  • Class Flavor: It’s Hunter-exclusive, reinforcing identity and uniqueness.
  • Immersive World Interaction: Gaining access through /chicken interactions in Westfall or the Barrens makes the feature feel alive, interactive, and charmingly “WoW.”

The Problem in Retail

Hunters and other ranged classes are locked out of a major customization system—weapon illusions. Right now:

  • Ranged enchants provide no visible effects
  • There’s no cosmetic unlock system for ranged visuals
  • Melee weapons glow, sparkle, flame, and pulse—ranged weapons remain static

This limits both transmog creativity and class fantasy, especially for those who want their weapon to reflect their power, spec, or role.

The Solution: Bring Visual Enhancements to Ranged Weapons

The Poultry Scope proves it can be done. So let’s expand that creativity into Retail. Imagine:

  • Hunter-Specific Illusions: Vines for nature-themed builds, fel fire for dark rangers, arcane swirls for marksmen, and so on.
  • Transmogable Scope Visuals: Visual styles players can apply for flair and fun.
  • Glyphs or Toggle Features: Let us decide when or how effects are displayed—give us control, just like /chicken does.

Technical Feasibility

This isn’t as out-of-reach as it might sound. WoW already has:

  • Weapon illusions on melee
  • Toy-based weapon glows (e.g., Illusion: Flames of Ragnaros)
  • Animated engineering effects (like the Poultry Scope)
  • A transmog system that continues to grow in complexity and flexibility

If Classic can pull this off with limited tech, Retail can too.

Why This Matters

WoW has always thrived on fantasy and flavor—not just gameplay, but expression. A lot of us build entire transmog sets around our weapons. Melee users get to shine, literally. Hunters and other ranged weapon users should too.

The Poultry Scope made people smile. It gave them a reason to emote at chickens and go on a quirky mini-journey for something fun. That’s the kind of joy WoW should embrace everywhere—not just in Classic experiments.

Let’s bring that joy to Retail.

TL;DR: The Poultry Precision Scope is the perfect example of what ranged visual enhancements could be. Hunters in Classic can shoot chickens—please bring that kind of fun and visual customization to bows, guns, and crossbows in Retail WoW. We’ve waited long enough.

Thanks for your time—and please keep adding delightful, weird, creative stuff like this. It makes Azeroth more alive.

Sincerely,
A hopeful Hunter

I think this just highlights how silly season of discovery is.

People wanted classic, they got classic.

But when they ran out of content because surprise, it’s classic they wanted new content.

But not the 20 years of new content they already added, they want new old content.

And that’s how we end up with poultry scopes.

Chicken arrows is silly, but I dont see why glowing bows/guns isn’t possible like with melee weapons

Cuz players cry about funny stuff every time blizzard ever attempts it

I wish in Retail you go back into Classic World and rediscover the stuff in Season of Discovery Retail style.

People cried about loud gun sounds. You think they will put up with “Buh Kaw!” every 2 seconds?

:chicken:

they can mute it, but the option is there if they want it, and realistically who wouldn’t want to shoot chickens at the enemy

There’s a scope on live that makes you shoot out squirrels every so often. I know that much. Grinded Cataclysm Engineering on my only toon with Molten Front progress in order to get the schematic on her lol.

yeah, but its not a cosmetic effect, and it should be. why do every other class and spec other than BM and MM get cosmetic effects for their weapons

Did you even think about how many raid tiers this will cost retail?? Complete and total shutdown of the upcoming housing system as well!!
But hey let me shoot gnomes out of my guns and you got a deal

Personality, yes, it definitely gives a character a certain type of personality. But charm? No. Flying chickens are not charming.

That said, I agree that other visuals (including the ones you mentioned) would be a great idea.

i am using the chickens as an example and explaining it out, but realistically why do all the other classes and specs get all these weapon customization, and BM and MM don’t, this is what i am trying to change. bow, crossbows and guns need love
