Hunters and pets question

Im still using a cat I got along time ago. Im lvl 35, Do all pets function the same aside from what type they are if they are the same level? Dont know if im messing up not getting a new higher lvl pet or something

No they are not all the same. They have individual stats a lot of the time and depending what type they are they can learn different abilities. Check out petopia, it’s a good guide. You can select burning crusade and then it will show you everything about all the pets.

Pet families have different abilities they can learn. You still have to train them after taming them.

All pets have the same attack speed now, no more needing to farm Broken Tooth for PVP, for example. Cobra Reflexes increases their speed and should always be taught.

Petopia, as mentioned above, is your best reference to explore the different families.

People aren’t going to explain all of this to you on the forums. There are excellent online resources that will teach you the difference between tenacity, ferocity and cunning pet, their different abilities and uses and their pros and cons in varying game activities (farming, raiding, arena etc).

Cliffnotes:
Ravager for PvE
Scorpid for PvP

This has everything you need to know.

For clarification…

Pet attack speed and movement speed have been normalized so all pets are the same in those regards.

Pet Families (Species) are 1 of 3 types.
Offensive, Balanced, Defensive.
All ravagers have the same stats. They only differ in color.

Best bet is to just go with offensive pets unless you need a very specific ability.

Good example being…

  1. Ravager for DPS (gore/bite is undeniable the best focus dump setup)
  2. Scorpid for Arena sting protection (also viable in battlegrounds but not as much because of how chaotic fights are and how easy it is to kill pets).
  3. Owl/Bat for TPS (Good for leveling/grinding mobs because screech reduces melee AP in aoe and generates extra TPS with the aoe debuff)

Ravager and owl/bat are all offensive types with the same modifiers.
Scorpid has a defensive modifier but it’s stackable 4 sec cd sting makes it almost mandatory in arena for sting protection.
It’s preferred to have the offensive pets because that obviously translates to more dps and tps. So go for those whenever you can. The only exceptions to that rule is the scorpid.
You could make a case for boars in battlegrounds/mob grinding but not a strong one.

Once wrath rolls around that’s when the real fun with pets begins because they overhauled the entire system.

Read and study petopia/hunter discord and good luck.
