class to class comparison is a bit grainy since player skill is much more of a determination and lots of various variables but outright skills and spells neither is just straight dominant over the other
Im curious because i heard about Sm/Ruin, but how does that fair against a hunter with a pet? Fear pet - seduce hunter?

Private servers have been holding duel tournaments for months. A couple hunters do fairly well, even breaking the final 8 players on occasion. However, the tournaments are won by warlocks more than any other class, and by a wide margin actually. Warlock is objectively the best dueling class in the game.
Who gets the opening attack?
It depends on the arena…
Hunters lose vs locks in a duel, because they eventually run out of room to kite…
In an open field, however, a well played hunter has 5 yards on a warlock and can’t actually lose.
EDIT: Basically, hunter can (and even SHOULD) win, but it requires playing extremely defensively and winning via out-ranging the warlock, and/or vs a succubus user kiting backwards and forcing the succubus through a flare so it can be killed before it can setup an invis—>seduce combo for the lock.

Hands down best 1v1 class in classic.
Warlock hands down, especially if they are Soul Link. In BiS phase 4 gear (HH)

Hunter is even (within 60-40 either way, increasing difficulty)

This is based off of r14 / T2 geared players and access to many consumables, also assuming everyone has full cooldowns up, and is specd properly for PvP. Some classes raiding specs vary greatly from PvP specs, others not as much. In reality, it will be not nearly as set in stone, as you have no idea how good, how many consumables, and how someone is specced that you meet in the world.
Warlock is going to win this matchup unless hunter gets opening shots first. But people need to stop competing classes 1vs1. When you go into the BGs, which is where all your honor/ranks are, hunters are FANTASTIC. In there, they can shoot much more freely, multishot several jokers at once, flare doors to ruin your rogues, viper sting everyone in sight; it’s ridiculous. They also make good team tanks when attacked, high health/armor/dodge, deterrence. As a hunter I always welcomed being targeted over my much more frail team mates.
I remember farming felcloth off the satyrs in azshara back in vanilla on my human warlock with a couple of purples from MC and coming across a troll hunter in, what I later found out was dragonstalker, the tier 2 set. I’m guessing he was marksman specked because his pet never once went into a frenzy. We went 2-2 against each other before we just sort of stared at each other, saluted and went on our merry way. I imagine if I’d been in equivalent gear it wouldn’t have been a draw…
