Hunter Pets

Do hunter pets need to be leveled? I recently tamed some new hunter pets, (Ferocity, Cunning, Tenacity) and they are horrible in battle; constantly need healing or just dying. Is there leveling for new tamed hunter pets?

No. Use mend pet and they’ll survive.

I noticed this too…I had the mechanical rabbit you start with and i tamed the mechano strider in Loch Modan…same pet type, but the mechano strider has less health and less abilities than the starter bunny

Ferocity is best for pve. Cat, Scalehides, or even Gorillas have a defense abilities to prolong their life.

Cunning and Tenacity are both good for pvp. I fav Tenacity for pvp.

For pve I’m currently using a Wolf. Mend and Exhilaration both heal your pet.

I’ve noticed in 8.3 they take much more damage than before. “Assuming” it’s because the npcs are scaled to better gear we will get and if you aren’t at 340+, your pet takes more damage? IDK

I do know lots more healing on elites and usual a turtle/rez if my pet is tanking (soloing the 1.5-3m health npcs) with all the corruption and usually adds.

A lot of the npcs are doing spell damage instead of physical damage so thats prob why.

This is true yes. This is what usually happens whenever we get new content in patches. Especially nowadays with the mob scaling.

I can’t speak for soloing stuff as of 8.3 with around 340 ilvl and how hard it would be.

I tbh haven’t checked what pets there are that would be optimal for soloing harder creatures in the game.

I have my favorite pet which I’ve used since I got it back in early Wrath(Loque).
BfA has been no exception on this part. I leveled with a Loque(Spirit Beast, requires Beast Mastery), and have used him for everything that I’ve done in this expansion(part from the odd dungeon run where the group needed BL or similar).

Spirit Beasts are Tenacity-pets so, no passive Leech. They also have no family-specific defensive CDs like some other pet types(large DR). It does bring the regular Tenacity-DR that is Survival of the Fittest, along with Spirit Mend ofc.

I’ve soloed all elite mobs and mini-bosses since the start of BfA, except those that are specifically tuned to be raid bosses(weekly world bosses and such).
And I rarely have any trouble with them.

It’s essentially just a matter of keeping Mend Pet up as much as possible(use on CD) and if you know that there will be periods where your pet is going to take more damage for a little while, make sure you use Spirit Mend on your pet for such periods/windows.

I am 445 ilvl but I noticed that with 8.3 patch I feel more comfortable use my corehound or my clefthoof over my spirit beast. Spirit beast seems die easly.

The clethoof and corehound have much better defensive’s and the talent improved ferocity leech makes for great self healing and sustainability.

Forgot about this! I leveled w/still use Gondria since Wrath. I’m always pokey slow on gearing (only 443), but it’s improved our overall survival or Blizz changed the damage? IDK

I’ve found feeding works wonders between harder pulls and I always seem to have a ton of stringy loin.

I thought about switching to a clefthoof/corehound, but haven’t yet.

Get a spirit beast and utilize spirit mend on top of weaving mend pet in. Your pet is pretty much unstoppable, unless you aren’t paying attention.
