Which pet do you prefer to use and why?
I just reached level 10 and can’t decide between a cat or an owl.

You’re only going to get three replies here.
Get an owl for Screech
Get a Gorilla for PvP
Get Broken Tooth for literally anything else
Pet balance is not something that was well thought out in Vanilla.
Try a boar for charge.
First, look on Petopia for the pet you want before you decide. it will help a ton.
I got an owl until I was level 15 where I went to tirisfal for a special bat, as a bat has bite not claw (better actually) and still does screech (pet version of demo shout and great for pet getting aggro with multiple mobs) and glide. biggest downside is it only eats fungus and shrooms, so if thats a killer for ya, stick to an owl.
for pvp get a cat, you dont have to get broken tooth no matter what anyone says as yes, it is the best if you can, but its heavily farmed, timed spawn, and you wont get a chance until your in your late 30s, you also can find more pets with 1.2 attack speed at earlier levels, and once ZG is released, you can get… a bat with the same 1.0 attack speed
3. wolf once 60 for raids and high end dungeons as furious howl is great in those scenarios
also of note the following abilites can override screech, hence why not good in raid
Demo Shout. (Warrior)
Demo Roar. (Bear Druid)
Curse of Weakness. (Warlock)
Vindication. (Retribution Paladin talent)
some ppl will say boars are better, in single target mob farming yes, in aoe mob farming no. boars have a great stun but when leveling being able to take multiple enemies with your pet makes screech the better choice.
all personal opinions, take that as you will, if you dont agree, that is totally fine.
Owls were popular on private servers but from what I’ve seen, they suck in comparison to boars to level with.
Just get a cat at level 10 and stable it to learn bite and claw from something else when you get the chance then switch back.
Screech is for the aoe threat, when you pull more than one mob. What the debuff actually does is secondary.
I know every leveling guide I’ve read for hunters suggestion a cat pet for both PvP and PvE.
I am not sure what your point is with this statement, but the aoe threat in a raid is not good for a pet, (some exceptions) and furious howl is a buff to party members, and why you want a wolf, as it adds to damage.
Screech is great for leveling though and why I would suggest it for that, as you can get multiple mobs at a time for your pet to tank while you dps them down.
Leveling guides are for leveling the quickest right? That’s not really a priority for me, I would rather have a pet that’s good for the long term.
Seriously, go with what you want though, unless your trying to speed level, any pet works. I have seen people leveling with crocs, striders, you name it. long as you enjoy the pet that is all that matters in the end.
Cats aren’t good for the long term?
The point is, what it does (or does not do) in raids is pretty much irrelevant to someone asking about a leveling pet. And screech’s ability to get threat on multiple enemies can be a lifesaver when you’re leveling.
Personally my favorite tank pets are turtles, the Shell Shield ability can be a life-saver on a multi-mob pull. Bears and boars are good too.
Cats are great for the DPS, but most speed levelers use owls over them due to screech aoe threat and they are still decent dps (owls have claw). Cats have bad defense and are easily killed, plus higher attack speed actually lowers the damage of each attack
yea, but I stated that as well in my original statement, I added the raid comment as he wants longterm, longterm screech wont be as good in raids, so again, not sure what your point of bringing it up when I already had it there before was…
Honestly picking up various pets for the fun of it. Not worried til max level, then Im gonna stick with wolf, cat, owl once I get their max rank abilities.
Use what you want, OP. Just remember to turn Growl off in dungeons.
best answer, even better then mine (I get wordy and convoluted with just giving info) but its true, this is all that you need.
I don’t agree with this. Boars for their charge are probably the best for questing, the initial damage after the charge holds aggro better than other pets. Owl is great for its ability to hold more than 1 mob at a time too, but for single mobs you can’t beat a boar.
