Hunter pet rules in classic

So what are the rules for hunter pets in classic.

I am either misunderstanding something or experiencing a bug.

Firstly can a pet runaway?

Can it run away while i am offline?

How do I prevent it from running away?

I had feed it, named it, what else can be done to raise its happiness? Cause its happiness peaked when feeding it but quickly dropped.

Now I appear to have logged back in to a missing pet.

So can anyone tell me the rules on how to keep and maintain a pet?

Thanks

  1. Yes
  2. Never seen that happen (but people claim it only if they get broken tooth) lol I got broken tooth and he has not run away.
  3. Feed it, get it happy and let it kill stuff and heal while its attacking. As soon as its rank 2 (6 is best friend) you have a very good shot of not losing your pet (if you keep feeding it to be “green”) - yellow is okay, but green is where you want your pet at all times.
  4. Feed it better food.
  5. blow your whistle, your pet despawns when you take a flight path.

i called pet, revived pet and checked the stable, no pet in sight.

what is considered good food for a boar?

I believe boars can eat “anything”. Personally, I love cats and bats. I mainly use a cat because i like fishing and cooking, cats will eat all fish (cooked or raw). Bats are trickier they only eat fruits.

Just a dumb question here (I’m not an alliance player nor have I ever played one), do you guys have a quest that makes you capture 3 random pets and bring back to your hunter trainer? I am asking because those arent “real” pets and you mentioned boar, I know on the horde side “boar” is the first pet we have to train.

Those pets will always “run away” if you log out.

There is that quest.

To the best of my knowledge the boar i had wasnt part of that quest. The quest is for a cat, spider and owl, later i then caught the boar.

Your pet will have a loyalty rank, you can check it in your pet tab when you have your pet out. The goal is to get your pet happiness to green (yellow works for this as well, but green is best) and do things with it, during this it should gain loyalty. I would suggest getting it up a few ranks before logging off.

The only time I have heard of pets running away are either, low loyalty and not trying to raise it, or the bug with broken tooth.

Focus on happiness only to get loyalty and damage up, happiness does 2 things, raises loyalty when in yellow and green, and increases damage pet does 100% in yellow and 125% in green. When its red it does 75% damage and loses loyalty. Loyalty ranks can be lost like this and a pet can run away from that.

Hey Mayhap, I see you are on the Arcanite Reaper. I recently moved there on my hunter “Bomon”, maybe we may cross paths. My broken tooth vs your pet - go! hah

I moved for 2 reasons,

  1. Our guild name kept getting reported for not being role play enough on Grob (it was probably just too cool of name)
  2. there was 100,000 hunters waiting in bad lands, i didnt feel like waiting for my turn at a chance at broken tooth, so… I popped over and within only 1 day of campin him, - i got him!

Mayhaps we will (get it? GET IT?) I actually am running a bat while leveling, plan on getting a 1.5 attack speed kitty for pvp after I hit 60, and a wolf for raids as well (one from SFK as its 1.2 attack speed).

I never cared for going for broken tooth myself, there are plenty of 1.2 pets around that are easier to get, and once ZG drops, we get 2 bats that also have the 1.0 attack speed, and I like bats more.

This is the reason I rage quit WoW back when ZG was released (well shortly afterwards). I went into ZG solo (i was in a group raid that wasnt there) and I solo tamed a ZG Bat, it was AWESOME! it was super crazy fast (not talking about the 1.0 attack speed) but the speed movement was crazy. I could take my bat from the start of warsong match all the way over to the other side before the other side even stepped out of the tunnel and world pvp… No one could get away from me. It was super fun.

Well the nerf Bat hit (no pun intended) and the bat was rebalanced to fall in lines with the normal bats. I nerd raged quit and vowed to never come back… lol

I am only here to play with my coworker since he never played and wanted to try it.
