Hunter pet question

I read that they need to be fed all the time, kept happy or they turn on you.

Are pets really needed? Can I just use my lvl 10 taming rod all the way to 60 never taming a permanent pet? I tamed a boar with it and it doesn’t need to eat. But I think it will go away if it dies probably?

Trying to save costs here and not deal with cranky pets.

They only need fed a lot while you’re building their loyalty. It doesn’t take that long. Then they rarely need fed, unless they die. They don’t like that. I was a hunter main in vanilla though wrath

yes they are needed, they do a significant portion of damage. if you don’t wanna deal with hunter mechanics, why play a hunter?

Either hunter is not the class for you, or retail hunter is. Either way, this is a seriously WTF post.

Because I like shooting things. Not big on pet thing. Trying to figure out if my taming rod can go all the way to 60.

Yes, you need the pet, if you check your damage logs you will see just how much they do.

Keep them green/happy all the time because they level faster and learn faster when they are happy. Allyou need to do is kill beasts along the way (if they are meat eaters) and you should no trouble doing that. It only gets more of a nuisance if you use pets that don’t eat meat.

Any class you play requires currency to level up in one way or another. You just need to be judicious as to what you spend on and only take abilities you need at that time.

Well, you can shoot things as a warrior - they use bows/guns/darts. If you don’t think you need a pet, don’t be a hunter is my suggestion.

You should definitely not feed your pets. They’re just looking to live off the welfare state.

you’re supposed to get a buff rare spawn cat and you best keep that thing happy.

even if you could use the taming rod, it’d be pointless, your pet needs to learn skills to hold agro, so unless you want to melee to 60, and also be laughed at, you need a pet, or like others have suggested, don’t play hunter, that’s my suggestion too.

A happy pet does 125% of its normal damage. A neutral pet does 100% of normal damage and an unhappy pet only does 75% of its normal damage. A happy pet is a major contribution to the overall damage you do.

Take up fishing and use a pet that eats fish. Cat or bear off the top of my head, but there are almost definitely others. Free food for the win. That’s what my hunter character does. :woman_shrugging:

Boars will eat anything.

Do they eat meat?

This is both fascinating and alarming.

You know what OP, screw that pet. You just melee your way to 60 all on your lonesome. Im sure you will have a blast.

Help hunters get back their crown that mages have stolen…

Dude I can shoot things pretty easy so far. Does that change later?

I just want to shoot like a pro, not maintain a complicated relationship. You know what I’m saying? Like EQ ranger.

That’s why I want to know how far taming rod goes. Quest pet doesn’t require feeding.

Yes, but you do you, man, and I mean that seriously, not sarcastically. Play the way that’s most fun for you, at least while you’re playing solo. If you’re in a group, play the way that benefits the group the most so you’re actually a contributing participant. But when solo, rock on and play your hunter however you want. When my boyfriend played classic the first time around, he played his hunter as melee dps instead of ranged and had a ball. That’s the beauty of classic, in my opinion. You can mix and match talents and have much more freedom to play your class the way you want than in more recent versions of the game.

It’s not really a complicated relationship. Every now and then, glance at your pet’s nameplate. If the green smiley face is yellow and not smiling, toss your pet a bite of food.

Welp I guess you do you. Go down the marksman tree then survival. Use your rod and see how it goes.

Be prepared for criticism if you run dungeons.

He’ll be real popular rolling on +strength weapons.

After loyalty level 6 they only need to be fed about once per hour, its very minimal once you trained them all the way, and you get a lot more meat then you need from creatures if your pet is a meat eater.

I will say this, coming from someone that always mained a hunter. You won’t be shooting as much as you think. Your pet is your tank. Its your meat shield that holds aggro so you can do your ranged dps. It looses agro, you have to kite your mob. Mess up and you are in melee. Mess up with multiple mobs…well. You get the idea.

Your pet needs it abilities to hold aggro.

Just go try your way and see how it is
