Hunter Pet Issues Regarding Taming Lesser Dragonkin

Having reached level 23 renown with Valdrakken, I was given the “Taming the Dragon…kin” quest, which awarded me the item “How to Train a Dragonkin”. This allowed me to tame some of the newer additions to the hunter pet family, such as the lovable swogs. Of course, the honeymoon phase is over, and I’m actually looking at them objectively now. I’ve run into the following issues;

  • Lesser Dragonkin hunter pets will return “Invalid Target” when using Mend Pet
    EDIT DEC. 22: This has been fixed! You can now properly use Mend Pet on any tamed Lesser Dragonkin!

  • Named Lesser Dragonkin do not retain their names upon being tamed
    In a patch we received sometime during Battle For Azeroth, a change was made so that named beasts retain their names when tamed, allowing hunters to have pets with fancy names such as “Sewer Beast” and “Lost Offspring of Gahz’ranka”. This was applied to almost every rare spawn, vignette spawn, and important quest mob, though there are still quite a few that do not retain their name due to oversight, especially in Dragonflight. There are a few Lesser Dragonkin that do not keep their names as intended; ‘Deviate Faerie Dragon’, ‘Liskheszaera’, and ‘Shan’ala, Lost to the Tangle’. The Petopia community has a list of the tameable mobs that should retain their names here: https://www.wow-petopia.com/tamenamesuggest.php. Strangely enough, one Lesser Dragonkin outside of Cloud Serpents DOES keep its name when tamed, that being Nal’tazsar from Stonetalon Mountains.

  • Vorquin are considered Stags, despite requiring Lesser Dragonkin taming
    A minor issue, but Vorquin are potentially mislabeled. They are dragonkin in the wild, and require the tome to be tamed, but when tamed, they are considered Stags. They also have the issue where they cannot be healed with Mend Pet, despite being Stags rather than Lesser Dragonkin. Personally, I feel they should be in the Lesser Dragonkin category, but if this is intended, then that’s fine too. I like them all the same.

  • Numerous NPCs with tameable looks are not tameable
    There are many options for each color of every currently tameable Lesser Dragonkin, but there are also many options that are strangely not tameable. Some are NPCs with no real relevance, but there are named NPCs that exist that should also be tameable and retain their names, such as the rare ‘The Jolly Giant’ and the quest mob ‘Bossy Hornswog’.

There are probably more issues, but I haven’t found them yet. A big suggestion regarding these issues is to have what the hunter community calls a “taming pass”, where things that should be tameable are reviewed and properly adjusted.

Can confirm that both the Deviate Faerie Dragon (https://www.wowhead.com/npc=5912/deviate-faerie-dragon) and Liskheszaera (https://www.wowhead.com/npc=197009/liskheszaera) rare, while they can be tamed, CAN NOT be healed with Mend Pet.

Also please let us tame the Gold, Green and Blue Cloud Serpents. Surely it isn’t that hard to do a /growl or /roar or /bow or something like you did for the gryphons to turn them from friendly to neutral briefly enough to be tamed.

I’m almost certain blue is still available from a world boss tame.

I have a thundering blue in my stables.

That’s a thundering blue, I have one. :slight_smile: but I’d also like the non thundering variety.
