Hunter or Shaman? Returning player

I just got a dwarf DK to 60 Necrolord and have been dipping into Mythic+ and PvP for Conquest stuff. My buddy bought me SL for Christmas and I’m really enjoying it again! DK has been very fun, and since I haven’t played since the start of WOTLK, it’s neat coming back and seeing the changes. Classes seem faster and engaging now with more to manage.

So I’m looking at making an alt…I even went out of my way to research and do the leg work (granted no rep grind now) of unlocking Dark Iron Dwarves (Dwarves are the greatest fantasy race, change my mind).

Well, I’m waffling between rolling Hunter or rolling with a Shaman. How are they stacking? I read mixed messages on shamans, but with their sick anvil totems and magma spells…they feel right for a DI Dwarf. Hunters in general seems safe though. Thoughts?

As a person with 5 hunters and I LOVE hunters …play a shaman!

Hunters are complete garbage and before any elite hunters hop on here in there 225 gear… trying to convince players that they have no problems dishing out damage. Well look at survival lol how many years now? That’s right … not months … years!

I been playing my paladin ( snooze fest) but at least I can melt mobs in seconds unlike my garbage hunters .

Shaman all the way . Until next expansion when they “might “ fix hunters including survival .

FYI im being honest about a class I loved.

Depends on the content you are excited about and how much tolerance you have for swapping covenants and whatnot.

Hunters are in a bad spot for competitive dps right now. Shamans were in a terrible spot, but they’re probably the 4th or 5th best dps now.

Across patches, hunters are consistently mediocre, but good at handling mechanics. Shamans are boom or bust with more bust than boom.

Most people agree shamans have some of the most satisfying spell animations in the game, while hunters have few animations to speak of and their sounds require mods.

Shaman look cooler to play with their effects but Hunters are easier and more survivable

Rogue is the answer. Best class ever always

If your talking viability,
Resto shaman is good in all content.
Ele is really good pve but not quite top tier and top tier pvp.
Enh is average pve but top tier pvp.

Marksmen is quite strong pve similar to ele. Pvp not sure.
Beastmaster has continued receiving buffs its getting better pretty average pve. Not sure pvp.
Survival is pretty bad in pve unless you are aoeing. Aoe is insane but the single target is trash. Pvp they are pretty good.

Throughout wow Shamans tend to be shafted and usually not in such a great state but in the last few years ele has been quite safe.
Hunter usually have atleast one spec doing amazing

Marksmanship Hunter and Beast Mastery Hunter feel “Fine” but people will say otherwise but right now, focus on what’s fun. Marksmanship is the generally best choice since they hit hard, good utilities, still have a pet to use to help tank when soloing, and very simple rotation but I can say the same for Beast Mastery too.

As for Shamans, I only played Enhancement but they’re pretty strong but not the best either. Its just the matter of leveling to the right point to get the “Fun” out of it. The only thing I can state about Enhancement is that you better know how to macro and have a good macro-ridden mouse because you’re gonna have a lot to press, that’s the downside.

Personally, I’d say try both classes, and try each spec and feel what sticks.

Rogues are pretty dope. Not feeling one this time around, despite outlaw looking pretty damn fun. Was my first class during vanilla, followed by 3min mage through most the game.

You really can’t go wrong with hunter. Resto shaman is a solid choice too, but every group wants a hunter.

They do? lol

That’s gone I think … totems that is.

Both are meh but if you like pets, throwing traps, or simply standing still and shooting arrows, go hunter. If you like the elements, go Shaman. If you like both, level both, game isn’t going anywhere… no rush.

They both fair fine in most content.

I played WOTLK last, classes are more engaging then flinging fireballs and staying in one spot from my Mage back in vanilla/TBC/WOTLK.

I did make a Shaman and a Hunter, anvils are still there.

I heard they removed totems from Shaman , guess they reverted it ? /shrug
And sure engaging but I wouldn’t say it’s THAT much faster. It’s still pretty slow ever since they did their BFA changes going into SL also.

So if you intend to play serious content like M+ and raiding…both are bad picks but shaman is way better right now. Hunter is in a bad spot after MM nerfs recently, falling from godhood.

What is being used for M+ and raiding? I know my DK has no issues with getting groups thus far, is it that bad for Shammy and Hunter?

Hunter, but I may be a bit biased.

Shaman. Hands down. Ditched the Hunter I was progressing to reroll Shaman and don’t regret it at all. I played one when SL launched and feel like an idiot for switching to hunter when I did.

Fire mage, outlaw rogue, balance druids, are the most popular picks right now.

Considering I returned to BFA from the last time I played being WOTLK hunter has always been my main. I’ve made some alts over my time but none in BFA. They really fixed the problem I had in WOTLK being mana dependent. It’s funny I bought every expansion since WOTLK but only came back to BFA as it was so accessible.

Shaman,

You are limiting you options by picking a pure dps class. If for whatever reason you get bored of dpsing you are stuck on a hunter.

Shamans have Range/Melee dps spec and a healing spec, really keeps your options open long term.

How is Shaman a bad pick?

Resto Shaman is literally S tier in M+

Elemental Shaman has had a HUGE buff in 9.0.5 and is currently sitting in S tier alongside mages and boomies.

Hunters just got a buff yesterday on the reset as well so they are both in a decent position now.

Only thing to keep in mind with this is covs are split for enh and ele/resto. Although NF isn’t as bad for ele/resto as Necrolord is for enh.
