Is it efficient to put my first 11pts into MM to get aimed shot then go full BM?
Yes and no. The problem with Aimed Shot (while leveling) is that if you open with it, you’re very likely going to pull aggro from your pet. So then you’re going to be kiting the mob or meleeing it, instead of shooting it. But when you’re killing ranged mobs, Aimed Shot is great to open with.
That said, if you’re going to invest 11 points into Marksmanship for Aimed Shot, you might as well invest 3 more for 3/3 Hawkeye.
If you want to invest all your talent points into Beastmastery until you get 5/5 Frenzy (if you’re going with a 30/21/0 spec), not having Aimed Shot isn’t going to slow you down.
No. It’s more efficient to get first points in BM to create a tougher pet that doesn’t die to a stiff breeze.
And BS may be only outside, but it speeds up kill time and lowers downtime significantly.
I’d say for leveling, if your not interested in a stronger pet, after 11 go MM
I leveled as MM, it was a blast.
Aimed and arcane share cool down just FYI, so I would start aimed, send pet, and from there rotation.
If your pet growls, you don’t really pull threat.
A typical levelling build is 31/20/0. Most recommended progression trees don’t have you get into MM until level 46, and you don’t get Aimed Shot til level 51 that way.
eeww meta leveling build
Well, you either have the choice of making your pet a tank or just constantly running around.
Not particularly. Half of the time you can get by killing the mob with auto shots and arcane shots anyway. However if you really want to my advice is to get an owl. Its unique ability, Screech, is effectively a double taunt and it is rare for you to rip threat off it. Only then I could see using aimed shot while leveling.
Spec full BM until you can get Trueshot Aura then go full MM - forever.
Best advice is to get the details addon and on the settings tab click plugins and make it so you create a new window and click on tiny threat, so your details will have a damage meter and a threat meter.
With this you can see how close you are to pulling off your pet. It gets easier with feign to not pull.
Mm is fine to level as but the issue is Mana and threat, BM is easier because it makes your pet really good which is Mana free damage.
Either route you choose, I’d get the addon.
Unless you have enough agility to make Survival worthwhile…
I would recommend just going full meta BM spec. It is far more efficient and imo is no less fun especially if you are melee weaving while leveling.
for lightning reflexes to overshadow trueshot aura, in a personal sense, you have to be near bis naxx gear wise. Even then it’s probably not the best option for a group setting as 400AP isn’t something you alone can make up.
[edit:] Just for reference you need 667 agi, at minimum, to get 100ap from lightning reflexes.
At my near bis BWL-level I’m just a bit over the line at 693agi with buffs. (all buffs[imp motw, mongoose, array, squid, ZG, 10%agi DMF]. Without world buffs I’d be under the line at 548, my natural base is 472.

Leveling a hunter for the first time, i figured out having the weapon skill always maxed would help me a lot.
What i usually do is call my pet back when the mob is about to die so i can finish him with a melee attack saving the time to run to the corpse and collect the loot.
