I always abide by the “hunter code” when it comes to taming rare pets. I have been camping for Arcturis for quite some time. On and off since 2009 nothing too crazy. Kul Tirans came out and I thought that pet would be perfect for that race. It has been a few days, went to bio and came back to see a lvl 85 start to tame. Could have easily killed but why do that? We all want the pet. I marked the time and set out for this evening.
Had a lot of nice /emotes with some hordie hunters, but eventually Arcturis spawned and (I thought) I was the only one there. Wigged a bit and hit tame, next I know he is being attacked by a 110 hunter. I’m not sure if taming pet rules have changed over the years, but he didn’t even dent the bear. It was so great getting the tame and then killing him with it.
Normally I might have even stopped taming and let another have it, but this was just sweet and juicy. I just wanted to tell my forgetful story because I’m excited to have my new pet!
Unless I walk into an obvious crowd waiting for the rare tame and I know its going to be a free-for-all I personally feel like people need to stand in line, but I don’t think that’s a code. That’s just me.
Communicating with fellow hunters goes a long way. If its a pet you really want you can sometimes talk others into standing down. And if non-hunters show up, you absolutely don’t want some Pally whacking your pet-to-be just to get some AP.
I remember in Legion waiting on the mechanical parrot/bird that spawns in the courtyard of Hellfire Citadel in Tanaan jungle. I had taken care of all npcs and was the only hunter there but with 5 minutes to go a douche bag alliance hunter from Stormrage walks in and get’s the tame off a second faster than I do. And walks off.
And then walks back and taunts me.
Fricken piece of s— !
That experience and a few others has really soured me on anyone from Stormrage.
This is why I posted the story. I’m not that much of a “mature” person either in game, which is why this story was juicy and so so so sweet. Nothing like killing him with the tame he tried to ruin.
I’ll probably never follow any sort of imaginary made up line that people are standing in when it comes to taming a new companion, though to be honest I’m rather friendly myself and will generally never attack someone just trying to tame a new animal.
I guess for me, the code is basically, if someone is there before me and they are just starting/have already started to tame, I’ll leave it for them. I know for darn sure I ain’t gonna attempt to steal it from them, or even worse, kill the creature.
I should admit though that it has been a while since I got to put this line of thinking into practice as I haven’t done much rare hunting for a few expansion now.
I got my Sambas, Arcturis, Karoma, Bulvinkel, King Krush, not to mention Loque that I got during WotLK.
And as long as I stick to playing BM, I’ll probably also stick to my Loque. Can’t see that changing anytime soon.
Granted we are yet to find out specifics as to what will happen going into Shadowlands…
I don’t remember it ever being called a “code”. Common decency, maybe sportsmanship?
Anyway, during WoTLK I remember it being the unspoken rule, if you aren’t fast enough on the draw, congratulate and try again later. [Rule 2 was typically ignored where Loknahak was concerned, this necessitated the caveat to rule 2 and the reason for rule 1.]
If you show up for a camp and there is someone camping that specific spot, wish them luck and move on to the next camp if any.
I expect so many years later instant gratification rules the day more often. However, I still do the former even this many years later.
If they’ve made pets immortal during tames, that is awesome.
