So I decided to roll a mage because I know they are useful at endgame. Which I want to experience because I never did when I played back in vanilla. However I am missing the hunter class. I heard they are not that needed in raid groups so I didn’t roll one. I really want to play a hunter though. Are they really not invited to endgame raids?
DPS is always needed. but Hunters tend to get a bad rep by not controlling their pets well and dragging adds onto the group.
So, you should switch over to your classic character to post.
Tranq shot.
Hunters are needed.
How do I switch to my classic character? Sorry new to the forums
I am maining a hunter. I did find a guild to take me for a core raiding spot, however classic is different in terms of just rolling what is best. Hunters provide Tranq shot, they can kite, they can CC mobs. Obviously this does not apply to every fight. Still why would guilds not take hunters? At the very least you need Tranq shot and it eases up gearing. Imagine trying to gear 20 warriors and then hunter loot drops. That sounds like a raid group I dont want to be in. It is all about balance. Roll Hunter if you want to play Hunter, you just might need to put in a little effort to find your place.
The struggle to find 40 people to fill a raid group is going to remove the “this class isn’t good” mentality. Elite world first guilds might not look for hunters, but regular guilds will take whoever they can find that actually shows up for the raid.

Hunters are needed, but I’d recommend sticking to the mage at least until we know whether hunter is going to be fixed or not. Classic hunter is to vanilla hunter as stitches is to a pretty woman.
Do what the hunter in my guild is doing
Be the raid leader
You usually have a few hunters for tranq shot. Their dps is solid too. Plus, their gear will drop whether they are there or not, so better to being them and have someone to give it to.
Personally I like hunters in classic wow. Going to bring some to my raid groups. Those that can trap, dps, and move like magic johnson will always be welcome.
Hunters have bad DPS at endgame. They really lack scaling. Most raids won’t let hunters opt for builds that optimize their personal DPS because Trueshot Aura is the capstone for MM.
For as memed on as ret paladin is, they unironically do more DPS than hunters in gear past prebis. Hunter is the worst class that you need to bring to raids.
Very high skill cap, very low return on investment.
Not the best but not the worst but, definitely can be utilized. It’s not always the characters issue but a driver issue. I can recall several fantastic raid hunters from classic. I’m looking forward to finding these treasures again.
What class do you NEED to bring to raid that’s worse than hunter? Many memespecs handily trounce Hunter, but hunter has Tranq. If another class had Tranq, hunter would be legitimately useless.
They’re needed but at the endgame they have one of the most complex rotations of any class in the game. I look at it as a tradeoff for how easy they are to level. In my experience, its always been because the people who play them generally have no idea how to play them as opposed to them just not being a good class.
It’s one of the hardest playstyles with one of the lowest DPS values. Powergamer DPS players are probably on warrior, mage, or rogue.
We should stop looking at Classic as if DPS is the be all factor in why any class gets into a raid. DPS is important but pretty much every class has something that can attribute to a raid group. Paladins have awful DPS and their raw healing isn’t even comparable to a priest, but they have great buffs and great utility.
Back in vanilla we had 2 huntards.
Their damage was actually pretty decent. Not rogue-killing dps, but up there with locks and mages.
That’s more of an indication that your locks and mages sucked, than the hunters were good.
Maybe not needed but they can still do good damage. I wouldn’t worry about it unless you are getting into a high end guild that is very comp focused, which doesn’t seem to be necessary really.
