"Humble" mogging

Personally, I fancy a lot of the HD and detailed armors. I enjoy xmog farming each week in hopes of getting a new piece that’ll complete any number of looks I’m after.

But one thing has always boggled my mind in MMORPGs is the “basic” look. I get if you’re oddly not into armor and want to take on the world of the undead with nothing more than the skin on your back; but… why?

Do none of the hundreds of armors and cosmetic options appeal to you?

Is there some kind of “humble” philosophy behind it?

One could make the argument “Dude, you’re a chesty draenei” and you’d be right. I don’t wear armor for “protection”, I wear it for an aesthetic appeal.

I’m just wondering and curious as to the draw towards rags and a simple wooden sword mentality in the mogging community. I’ve got friends that do this and it drives me nuts.

You do you boo boo, your toon doesn’t affect me lol. I’m just genuinely curious.

So tell me? Why is your mog so; “basic”. And I mean that not as an insult.

Sometimes a humble mog fits the theme of my character.

Here’s an example:

I wanted my undead Hunter took look like she just crawled out of the grave. That’s why I left her bones exposed and used drab gray armor pieces.

Suppose I could see that. I guess my brain just can’t comprehend it concept of basic characters lol.

I don’t understand why one would start a new toon, with crap armor, work hard to level and skill up, only to max level and fight end game content in rags.

In regards to your hunter. That’s still a good mog man. you got armor on.

I’m talking those real basic people who literally hide everything and wear just a simple shirt, pants, boots and a basic weapon.

I love this topic. I think that many of the iconic looks come from less-flashy transmogs, and being a player since Launch Day on Classic, I really love the Magister’s Regalia / Sorcerer’s Regalia looks, not to mention the Arcanist and Arcanist Orange/Red Recolor. They are lower poly count armors, but their look is clean and classic.

I also really enjoy the class-defining looks that Blizzard released with Warlords of Draenor. These were the armor sets (see: Mountainsage for mage) that demonstrated what a max-level character would look like when fully geared up during the WoD days, but the armor was less max-level and more class-defining. Again, some really beautiful armor sets here - check out the Paladin, Hunter, and Rogue variations, respectively.

My current mog is a WoD Mog consisting primarily of “Guiding Light” set that I felt really suited not only Draenei but my pally! I mixed it up with Jandvik chest/belt to add a little color. Just a coincidence that the bra matches the Jandvik set when hiding the chest when I feel like flaunting my dreanei sexiness lol.

I can understand what you’re saying there.

I suppose the reason it’s so difficult for me to accept the basic (classic) looks is because of the low grade quality of the xmogs.

In later expansions they clearly started giving armors some 3d features instead of just painting onto the character models; and I LOVE this. I love that they’ve attempted making armors separate from character models because it just feels right.

When I look at a character and I can clearly see that the pants/shirt are just painted on, it really bothers me. Add in the low res textures and it just breaks it for me.

If they renovated the classic armors to hold their appearance but polish them up for modern times; I’d 100% be ok with it.

Suppose it’s an OCD issue. Just can’t mix match old with the new, breaks my brain lol

“I am my transmog” - Illidan Stormrage

I even have the Felblaze Infernal off of Guldan to go with my transmog.

Id say my monk is of the more humble style myself.

His personality (I’m an RPer, if ya couldn’t guess it) is highly based off of Uncle Iroh from Avatar. So he’s all about the simplicity of things in life, and thats down to his armor and style of clothing as well.

I liked that they gave us the ability to turn off all visible armor except pants. It allows for all different kinds of looks. Like this little barefoot jungle boy. After a decade and a half of looking at bulky shoulders, huge boots, etc., it’s a nice change.

Humble?

Never heard of him.

I really relate to this with my Mogs, honestly. And finding the right “simple” HD armor can be bad enough, but it’s weapons and shields that are the most painful to me. Everything’s just so big.

A rogue ain’t meant to be flashy…

can’t relate to this much lol; I feel there’s not enough big. They always want to make things so… pointy, electric, firey lol. That’s why my Pally is my favorite toon to mog, they got a few more bulky options.

Just can’t make sense of a tank that doesn’t look… tanky lol

I beg to differ lol

Depends on the personality of the character. Like many of the other RPers here.
While THIS character right here is a Warhammer 40k reference with the abundance of gold and big shoulders, other characters in my roster are things like a simple architect in overalls or a mourning paladin in service to a dead god, both of which prefer simple appearances.

I don’t understand RP, but I can respect that lol. At least it’s got purpose.

Roleplay is a primary reason I bet. I don’t enjoy being a grand hero of Azeroth, I’m much more attracted to the idea of being a blacksmith who decided he wanted to defend his homeland from invaders. A mage novice who failed the academy and picked up her father’s old hunting rifle instead while she goes on adventures. A recruit in the Alliance military who is unsure if her heart is in the war.

I create little stories for every character I create, and it is a tremendous part of my enjoyment in any RPG.

Also, I don’t like giant shoulder pads in particular, WoW always has a larger than life take on them and I don’t like how bulky they look.

my wife hates shoulder pads too. I tend to like em when not spikey and on fire/ice lol.

I dont role play much. The extent of my RP is “I’m a tank, I’m supposed to get hit. I should probably protect myself at least a lil bit” lol. (this current Xmog does include helm and chest; they’re just hidden atm) lol.

When it comes to shoulders, I like big and round. Even on my priest.

This being my priest. It’s not a basic mog, but it… is? Just like the dull colors and the big round shoulders. This is what I, personally, consider a humble mog. EDIT: Eh, I forgot I made her sexy again. She typically wears the Tranquil Spiritbind set and calls it good.

you’re a male dude playing a wh*re character in a slutmog I think you have very little grounds to stand on when it comes to mog conversations

Depends on the race/gender a lot too. This pandaren is bottom heavy so I like having shoulder armor on her to balance her out.

But nelves are suuuper tall and lean, so big shoulders make them look like a giant walking T to me. And for females specifically, the shoulder armor sits too far on the edge of her body, they look like they are floating.

Etc
