Dogs are used by the police to find missing people and criminals, drugs, bombs and for protection.
Dogs can detect cancer, diabetes and seizures. They can lead you if you’re blind. They can calm your PTSD.
Dogs will work beside you on the farm. They can protect your livestock, cut one from the herd and put them in their pens.
An untrained Newfoundland is a natural water rescue dog.
They can pull you in a sled hundreds of miles across the snow and keep you warm at night.
They will hunt with you. They’ll chase down a deer, find a hiding rabbit or retrieve a duck from the water.
And what does a cat do? Scratch up your furniture, crap in a box, eat and shed. Yes, dogs have been known to do that too (except crap in a box) but you get at least one of the benefits I listed above.
When the group sound go off on my computer it is nap time. As soon as the last boss falls… He’s like ; can I go out now or did ya get a shinny and can I see?
500 ft away from our house is a drive and if there is someone walking. Hey you I SEE you… Then tells me all about it.
They domesticated themselves when humans started agriculture and storing grains. Before that, cat’s weren’t fond of humans.
Storing grains attracted rodent, and cats started to domesticate themselves with humans to hunt the rodent creating a win-win alliance. Humans save their food, cats get to hunt.
Cats never got fully domesticated though, still, given the proper care and love, cats show as much as affection and love a dog shows. And they too eat with us, play with us, and cuddle with us. But unlike dogs, humans were the ones who domesticated them, rather it’s them who approached humans, and they still have keep their wild nature.
Cats also love their humans
Also have been known/recorded protecting family
If trained and given the chance could probably do a number of other tasks mentioned
Cats work on farms/barns killing mice/rabbits etc.
I know people with cats that hike/hunt with them.
Anymore brilliant points you;d like debunked?
Ps I’m not a dog hater or cat lover… I have both and they are both great… Not sure why that concept is so difficult and why people assume that just because another animal is said to be great too, that it means their dog sucks or something?
People need to learn that more than one thing is allowed to be good at the same stuff
My allergies beg to differ. I loved my previous cat I had for 15 years, and pretty much the entire time I’ve lived at my current place, but I’m not missing the eye irritation and sinus pain. Luckily there’s an outdoor cat that visits me from time to time and I give it affection. Just need to make sure to wash my hands afterwards.
Tens of thousands of years ago there were some wolves that learned it was a lot easier to eat the scraps of humans than constantly keep fighting and struggling for food. Over time, humans began to deliberately feed them because humans learned that those wolves became an alarm system of sorts of threats since they could hear and smell things long before we could. Over time that relationship just grew and grew until both species were actively living together both for survival and companionship. Eventually, cross breeding happened and over time, thousands of years, you started to see what would become modern dogs.
Having (most pets) for most people is like saying “I want my heart ripped apart in 15 years”. Thats what happened when my last rescue died. Told myself i wouldnt get another doge… That lasted for all of three weeks… Then got another rescue.
And now it has multiplied to 2 doges… And I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Training aspects aside they are still pack animals. they will lay with the alpha when it’s time to sleep, they will Shadow you wherever you go if you’re the alpha, and they will watch you eat if you’re the alpha. You can see the instinctual stuff that they do in their everyday Behavior even though they’re domesticated.
There’s a theory I heard once that may be hogwash, but I still like it.
Long ago, wolves looked on at the camp fire. Most of the wolves looked at the fire and were afraid. The rest decided that being cold and hungry is for chumps.
Never said they didn’t but I don’t think it’s as much as dogs.
In Ripley’s? I had a cat that would kill snakes that came in the yard but they’re not going to actively protect anyone. A burglar can pick your cat up and slam it against the wall. Dog breeds like pits, rotts, shepherds, mastiffs, etc can seriously maim or even kill a human.
ROFL list one.
So does mouse traps. Even with today’s technology nothing beats a good herding dog.
Sounds exhausting to carry around.
… I’m a redneck. My family kills any animal that moves (you know, “it’s coming right for us!”) and none has ever hunted with a cat. Please explain.
The Roomba company says that most people opt to have their Roomba repaired and sent back when it breaks instead of having a free replacement sent to them, and a lot of them have googly eyes glued to them.
requires certain breed of dog to perform many of the tasks you mentioned… lots of dogs can be picked up and slammed to the ground too. And many bigger breeds you mentioned don’t make good guard dogs either if not trained properly or just aren’t ‘into it’
all I’m sayin is that there are a lot of variables on both sides but you are preaching your facts as gospel
We humans have been with dogs since we were cave men wandering aimlessly in the endless pursuit of food. The started as wolves but they have been our companions and we’ve now had their pack mentality hard coded into our genes just as they have now have our presence hard coded into theirs.
