Gnome mage is very good because you can blink to safety before you get punted.
Hard to answer that without knowing what your criteria are.
If you’re min-maxing I think the correct answer is still dwarf, although race selection for that reason will always be a matter of increments.
If your choice is aesthetic, then that’s completely subjective and personal. If I was starting over I’d probably go with gnome simply because I like their casting animations. I know I could race change my mage or simply roll a new one, but this mage has been “with me” for 18 years now and being a human female is part of her identity in my head.
