I am back after many years away and boosted this toon today… I tried like 100 names and every single one was taken… was surprised this one wasn’t… but anyway, what’s their policy on someone that has a name and hasn’t logged in for say 8 years? Or 2 years… or whatever.
Thanks

As long as someone is active in Battlenet once every two expansions, they keep their names. There is no name release schedule any longer.
Edited for clarity with support article:
All the character names in a Battle.net account automatically become available after the Battle.net account remained inactive for two expansions. Blizzard Customer Support will not help with releasing the name of a character for you, even if the player who has the name has stopped playing.

they never purge. after 2014.
you could put in tickets to get names held hostage by the undead legions that never log in, but after 2014 or so the policy changed, and now they never change names. the names are kept on the account.

Do you mean never take the name from an old character and make it available to anyone? Not sure what you mean by change.
They will free up a name if the account with it hasn’t logged in in a long time, but it’s something like 2-3 expansions of inactivity is required.

that is exactly what he means. as long as there is an account with the name . It belongs to that account. You just have to get more creative. I have never had an issue finding a name. They used to have a policy where they would release the names after so many months of non activity. They stopped doing that though a while back. Not sure why.

Well on large populated servers it is much harder.
naw I mean they just don’t free up names anymore, they used to, they dont now. I have another account. that I havent logged into since MoP.
those names on that account are still there, and those names are significant. I got an orc war named Varok, and an Orc DK named Dranosh.

yeah… and they said drop protection was a thing in an article too haha.

It isn’t. It’s the policy that’s been in effect for quite some time. Support articles are updated when necessary.
It literally says: Updated: 3 months ago

You can’t be taken seriously. Moving on.
yeah, either way I have solid proof that it isn’t the case. just because someone says they do something doesn’t necessarily mean they do.
It helps if you’d READ. That article literally says “active on BATTLENET ACCOUNT” not WoW license. Learn the difference.
All I know is I have an account I have not logged on or paid in 4 years . All my names are still there intact. Maybe if there is a name you find that is old , have you tried asking the gms or the blizz support line if there is a way to get a unused name? You really cannot be depending on articles on here . They change things so much. It is probably best to ask them directly instead of us speculating. you know ?
Deargodinheaven…

BATTLENET ACCOUNT
Not WoW license
There’s already a thread on this from a few months ago on the CS forums and that article was just updated back then too. Literally ZERO speculation. It’s right there in the support article.

We need surnames/lastnames. Kind of dumb there can only be a single John/Sarah/etc. on all of Azeroth.
