Heard really mixed things about it. Some people are claiming it’s going to be close to meta, whilst others are saying how squishy it is.
I’m mostly asking from a PUG, averageish player (10-12s are where I tend to both lose interest and start to run out of steam) who really doesn’t enjoy VDH but her main (BDK) is feeling so rough it’s time for a change.
Would quite like to play paladin as adore the class fantasy but unsure how viable it is - again, for an average player who will be spending most of her time pugging so can’t rely on solid healers or voice comms.
i mean for 10-12 range,
its fine. meta doesnt matter and tanks is always in short supply that level of keys anyways. just know how to press your buttons and you’ll be able to press W on these dungeons

For 12 keys Prot Pally should be fine.
Most people has been ranking tanks like this:
S tier - VDH, Brew, Prot Warr
A tier - Pally
B tier - Bear and BDK
I am not sure what happened recently, bud suddenly top key pushers and MDI players started praising and ranking Prot Pally as S tier. This is weird, since no real balance happened recently.
It’s damage is on the low side, usually doing around 45% dmg of the dps specs, while prot warr or brew are doing ~55%. It still requires a lot of healing from healer, usually 35-40% of all healer’s healing goes to prot pally. It’s self sustain is still quite low.
Season3 is a lot harder on tanks than season2, general tuning is also a lot harder in general. Because of that, pally really wants to play with top DPS specs like Frost DK or MM hunter, to make sure packs are not living too long.
The only two tanks who are perceived as weak are Bear and BDK.
So in summary prot pal should be fine. But tuning is not done, there is at least one more tuning pass that is going to happen this weak, another one after patch launches. And most people are expecting big tuning changes after race to world first finishes.
I would say it’s quite early to choose main.
But prot pally should be fine, I cannot see it getting any nerfs.
i mean i can tell you
screaming out random things brings views and people love it when they talk about tierlists and nerfs and buffs
this is why you dont really fish for a meta in ptr, because meta only solidifies in the .5 patch
like how prot warrior was meta in s1 of df then turned into prot paladin despite the nerfs and buffs to prot warrior and paladin were irrelevant in the long run
while people who did hard tc work knew from the start that prot paladin was gonna be the meta tank in df start.

Some tier lists are praising Prot not because it is particularly better than other tanks in a vacuum, but because it is well suited to the rotation and balance of keys in season 3.
S3 brings a lot of melee carry-on effects such as bleeds, and a lot of tank-targeted spell bolts. Being a spec that favors a good amount of crit means a good parry rate, which negates melee effects (as opposed to warrior’s blocking which mitigates the damage but still delivers the effect). Having access to Dwarf, plus BoP/BoS and DS clears bleeds and magical debuffs that do punch through. Warrior losing Spell Block means Prot Paladin is now the only spec that can block spells, which helps immensely with the bolts. We also have poison cleansing which is useful, and all the great utility we always had as paladins.
All that is to say, in a season balanced differently (more outright melee damage, more self-sustain pressure, less bleeds, less spell bolts, etc.) Prot would be in a worse position. It’s looking favorable for S3, despite not having the greatest raw survivability/DPS out there otherwise.

This is a great break down. What tank do you think will be best at pugging around 10-12 and AOTC?
Pugging 10-12, the best tank will likely be Warrior. Your basically immortal at that level and don’t really need to do alot to maintain it.
It buffs alot of the really good hybrid spell damage melee specs that will be very popular like Frost DK and Havoc.
Every tank will be pretty good up to that level, though others take more effort to be as tanky and self healing as a Colossus Prot Warrior.
Prot Pally will be quite good for really good tanks, but will be tougher for people who aren’t all in on it.

any tank would be the best for 10-12 and aotc.

Every tank is completely viable at this level and playing something you enjoy is far more important than meta especially as a tank who can easily get into groups.
If anything prot paladin utility shines in pugs and a lot at the 10-12 range where you can make up for your weaker pugs.

Expect BDK and Guardian Druid XD
if you cant time these keys as bear or bdk then frankly thats says more about you than anything else
Nah they are worse tank currently low damage, low self healing, no group utilities. Sure they can still time keys but with twice the effort and half of the result. Just swap to VDH for easy walk in the part to time keys in m+ dungeons.
Simply not true. BDK is arguably in the 10-12 range one the BEST tanks because of their self healing outscaling the incoming damage. They fall off sharply as you go higher, but at that range, BDK is as good as they are in raid at just ignoring incoming damage.
Bear is insanely tanky at that level and is an incredibly stable, easy to work with tank that can largely ignore the issues it has in higher key levels.
If you can’t perform on those tanks up to a 12… that’s you.
your talking about 10-12 keys, you can time these by pressing W
also while both of these tanks do lack unique utility, theyre in no way weak defensively or offensively. to say that just shows high tier ignorance and peoples reliance on tierlists
i can time these keys on my vdh with easy, i can also time these keys if i swap to blood or bear with relative ease as well
again if you cant time these keys that every competent bear and blood player will be timing day one then thats on you
