Hey there, Moonguard! I am a WRA-Alliance Role-Player. One of the last of my kind.
After being away from the game for about three years, I decided to come back for War Within. And, well, while Alliance-side RP on WRA has never been all that prominent, it seems to have dwindled even further in the years I’ve been away. Indeed, dwindled so much that I cannot help but wonder if it is time to move on to greener pastures.
However, I’ve only ever been a visitor to Moonguard. A tourist, if you will. I know Stormwind’s Mage District is alive with walk-up RP, similar to Orgrimmar’s Valley of Honor on WRA. But that’s about all I know, really. I don’t know much about the “customs” here, what’s appropriate and what isn’t.
So yeah. I’m wondering if there’s anything I should know about Moonguard before I give Blizzard twenty-five entire dollars.
SW as a whole is pretty good for RP, but especially cathedral district for Holy and clinical sorts, Mage District for ruffians, criminals, and overall edgy folks, and Lion’s Rest for the more laid back and recreational sorts.
The flip side to this is literally nobody is in MG Orgrimmar most of the time. It’s deader than The Plague Lands.
Just avoid opt-in RP, tends to draw the worst people. But hey if you’re seriously considering, what’s the WRA character and what are they like? I’ll send em an invite if I like what I hear.
Feel free to shoot me a /whisper sometime, goes for anybody wanting to join.
Welcome back! The draw, and repllent to others, of MG-A is the sheer size of it. There is just about anything to do at any given moment. Walk-up RP is the thing to do in Stormwind and then there are entire guilds whose motive is to simply get people put of Stormwind.
MG-A truly is a beast of “It is whatever you want it to be” and there will always be some negative aspects. People have had bad times on this server, others have had great times. What I adamantly refute is the notion that MG is a “Weird” server because of Goldshire. That place is a meme and self-contained. You have the power to simply not go there. You will be rewarded with my new favorite Alliance hub for RP. I too came from WRA and though I am trying to offer a positive voice on their forums, the decision on servers comes down to one simple question:
Do you want to make your RP or do you want to find it? If you want to make it and have patience, WRA is a good place as well as MG, albeit more crowded. If you want to find RP and get caught in the flow, then I recommend MG-A.
Not bad. Planet got stabbed by a cosmic space giant with a really big sword once but other than that things have been swell here. I think there were some dragons getting up to dragon nonsense recently but dragons always gotta do dragon drama.
We came here from WrA at the end of Shadowlands because we were looking for a more active server alliance-side. It’s just as friendly as WrA and we had no problems finding a non-rp PVE guild.
If you enjoy WrA’s atmosphere and mood, you’ll similarly find a home on MG.
I was in the same boat when I decided to come try retail again sometime around the middle of Dragonflight. The last time I’d played was around BFA as a WRA main with characters in both Horde and Alliance. A lot of things have changed over the years, some good, some bad. The best advice I can give is to do what I did: try making an alt over here on MG and testing the waters. I don’t do public RP really, but I enjoy running around SW and the other popular Alliance areas and seeing tons of activity.
There is always something going on in MG. Pretty much every corner of Stormwind has people roleplaying in it, and while I don’t engage, it reminds me a lot of my time back in WRA. It’s just a nice feeling one gets when the world feels alive and active, and MG certainly has that for Alliance.
I’m not saying don’t come here, but consider looking around and sticking it out on WrA a little longer first to see if you can find something there. WrA Alliance needs bodies, and there are dedicated folks there who want to do things. MG Alliance is big and flashy, and is objectively fun and nice to be a part of as someone who dabbles on the blue side, but as someone who RPs MG-H that is in a pretty similar situation to WrA-A, there are quality guilds and folks just waiting for ya to join up and would love to have ya.
Give it a shot and if you still cant find anyone or something you like or mesh with, then consider making an alt over here and see whats up. Leveling is stupid easy now and will feel like almost nothing.
as a matter of technicality, you could actually probably just stick with WRA Alliance and still get a MG guild, guilds are cross faction/server now. They just gotta do away with some of the draconian restrictions.
For example if you go Horde to Alliance or Alliance to Horde there should be: 1. no language barrier, 2. the ability to at least interact better with the opposite faction guildies, etc.
I would say, don’t worry about this part much. There are so many people, all with different preferences and styles, that whatever you want to do you’ll likely find likeminded people. There are server projects, but you can also spend your entire time in the sea of people in Stormwind and never really encounter them, and all of their stuff is opt-in.
I’d say, before you spend the cash on a server transfer, roll up a MG-A character and walk around! Look and see what’s up. If you do an allied race they get dumped into Stormwind after a short setup, Void Elves are probably among the quickest. You’ll want to have TRP3 installed to see the profiles but don’t worry about making one if you’re just browsing.
Just walking around and watching people is a great way to get a feel for the overall vibe and start identifying people, groups and guilds that pique your interest.
Having come from WRA-A because that server was dead when I returned to the game, I will tell you that there is a LOT of roleplay to be found on MG.
A lot of the RP is also cringe or low quality, but there are plenty of solid writers out there. Just need to be a bit more discerning when looking for it.
RP aside, it’s a decently sized server with several raid guilds that actively progress each season, and the general population is pretty chill. I don’t regret transferring.
I would honestly worry though. One wrong move and you could wake up finding yourself plastered all over wyrmguard secrets for saying or doing the wrong thing. Until that site goes down, I think it should be on everyone’s mind or someone starting up another blog in it’s place. Though it covers things on wyrmrest. However, majority of the vitirol does come from Moonguard.
To the OP: I’d say largely the best way to start is knowing the etiquette which shouldn’t be any different than Wyrmrest being a transplant myself. Just be mindful of what your own boundaries are and know when to say no. And when to place someone on ignore when they want to ignore that boundary.
I don’t worry about stuff like that, mostly because I know that my RP is boring as heck from the outside, my characters aren’t in charge of anything and I don’t really involve myself in drama. I’ve been around for forever and as far as I know I don’t get people talking about me in places like that, or at least nothing has gotten back to me or my friends.
Waaaaaay back in the day on another server I was a Big Name and it was exhausting. People will always try and cut down the tallest daisies, the more you get noticed the more people will have an opinion on who you are and what you’re doing.
Maybe I just don’t move in the most gossipy circles, but no one that I’ve seen really goes after anyone who just sticks to their group of friends and contacts and isn’t committing heinous acts like sending people death threats and being gross at people - with the caveat that I’ve heard stories about WGS and Twitter. In general, though, I don’t believe in giving places like that any measure of my peace of mind to the point where I’d let it make me tone down or change my RP because I was afraid of criticism from the outside.
It’s not that I think that the threat that places like that represent is overblown, I just really don’t think that the masses of people at large that make up MG-A care as much about mundane minor differences of opinion and faux pas-es as people worry about.
Oh man, Wyrmguard Secrets. I never dabbled in it but I read Spine of Deathwing when they were active, for a chuckle. In hindsight, not the healthiest thing for any RP server.
Moon Guard is great! And WrA is too! I played Horde side on WrA for many years and some of my best memories were made there. I started doing RP on MG-A probably 6 months ago and have loved every second of it. I would recommend giving it a try as I am newer to the Alliance scene too.
