How would WotLK work without flying?

A lot of people want no flight in TBC/WotLK if they’re released for classic, and that’s fine, I’m not trying to debate that. Just an honest question: How would WotLK work without flight? I ran through all of Northrend for loremaster in the month before classic came out, and Storm Peaks and Icecrown at least seem to require flight for a ton of their quests. Would those zones even work without flight? (I can’t remember, can you even get to Ulduar without flying there first?)

Again, this is an honest question, I’m not saying “see we need flight, it wouldn’t work otherwise!”

retail troll, bringing same thread. these guys only know like two songs.

  • this is broken in classic
  • Why can’t we have X Retail feature?

I’m not a retail troll, I just forgot to switch to my classic toon before posting. I’m not going to switch now either because then my replies won’t be linked to me. I said twice that this is genuinely an honest question.

Mini-portals or flight taxis.

BC and WotLK don’t work if you just remove flying, the zones were made for flying so they would have to be revamped completely.

It wouldn’t. Period.

Retail wants to export their flying threads to Classic.

No thanks.

Also this is why I am for Classic+ instead of BC and WotLK.

I agree that flight sucks. I don’t want it in any new expansions that are released for classic. I don’t even play retail, I just did some Legion and Northrend stuff for a month before classic released. As I said, this has nothing to do with trying to tell people it’s needed.

Teleport pads to go from the ground, up… Ultima Online did it in 1997… So not even a new concept. Run to the teleport pad/tile, get zapped into the place.

I’d fully expect #nochanges to carry over to BC and WotLK as well. Flying was an important part of those expansions and removing flying has just as many implications as adding flying to vanilla would. It’s a terrible idea.

Also, BC and WotLK should have their own separate servers so vanilla can remain untouched. I can’t ever say that enough.

We don’t need any retail features in classic.

If you would like to use those features, select retail at login and click play and then have a great day

There are no places you MUST fly to in Icecrown; there are ways to walk there.

Ulduar… i think you might be correct, but that could be solved by simply adding a quest that gives you a free ride to the FP that is up there.

Everywhere else you can get by walking (except maybe Wintergrasp, but IIRC, there are ways to get in there from Icecrown - maybe not 100% intentional, but it can be done; again, this can be solved by simply having a quest to “join the battle in WIntergrasp” and the Flight Master sends you to the FP there for free).

Personally, i think people who dont want flying can go DIAF. The constant whining about “Muh Wurld Pee Vee Pee” didnt hold water then, and doesn’t now.

World PvP was never good. Ever. Not once. Not in Vanilla, not in TBC, not ever. It was -always- about ganking or getting ganked, or mindless zergs. Its the crowning example of Rose-colored glasses in effect.

So, if flying “killed” world PvP - good. It needed to die, because it was 100% grade-A dumpster-fire from minute one.

However, back to the OP - yeah, it could be done with little issue.

If you reply to forum threads in the future, I hope you actually read them first. Thanks for your input though.

Honestly I personally would like to see wotlk released before bc for classic. Keep every at 60 and have gear resistant based to avoid power creep. They would have 3 ways to work around the necessity to fly, portals, flight paths. And minor changes to the terrain so you could walk up the them. Also the could remove dalaran and add 2 strong holds one for each side keep the factions apart and at each other’s throat. They could even add a goblin neutral town like booty bay. Obvious some of these fixes are far more work than others but it would be amazing for the players

What about your faction’s flying ship? Wasn’t that the main quest hub in the zone? I don’t know how you can get to it without flying.

Flight paths take you there.

The first time you get the quest to go to Icecrown for your faction, you get a free flight to the ship from Dal.

Edit: remember, all of the quests in the zones that aren’t raid-related assume you cant fly yet because you aren’t 80.

Thats why none of Storm Peaks actually requires you to fly. The ONLY place you have to fly to for a relevant non-raid or non-post-80-pre-raid quest you are given free rides to get there.

removing flying from TBC or WOTLK breaks the game because zones were designed around flying in mind

You can’t get to many locations in Storm Peaks or Icecrown. Forget about Wintergrasp entirely.

Actually, it only “breaks” portions of TBC, which DO have places you have to fly to the first time (Skettis, Ogri’la). Again, though, these can be solved by simply giving you a quest to get a free ride to those areas first (as there are FPs there once you get up there).

LK actually did away with this. There is no place you cant get to without flying that is required for leveling/questing. Only a very few raid-related places require flying (getting in to Naxx, though you CAN be summoned; flying up to the Ulduar plateu the first time (there is an FP there you can grab after that), etc)
