If I am moving some characters to TBC and leaving some in Classic, how will the addons be handled? Will they automatically be copied to the TBC client (which I would then update)? Will a copy be maintained in the Classic Era client?
I want a smooth transition where I don’t need to re-download and configure addons.
Since the only support blizzard offers for addons is the API and directory, it is not likely they will be automatically copied to the classic ERA server.
Also, the API has changed between the two games, so you will need to use classic versions, i.e. 1.13.7 in Classic Era and TBC versions, 2.5.1 for TBC.
By and large you can copy your WTF folder. Most of the addon dev’s are doing their best to make sure they are backwards compatible.
You will have some issues with WA as some spell id’s are jostled around.
I plan on just copying my addons and wtf folders to the classic era and then running WoWup which should notice the TOC differences and install the correct versions for the client you wish to install to.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but TBC api backend is different than classic api backend, you’ll need to redownload many of your addons as 2.5.1 versions as the 1.13 versions will not work and will need separate a branch.
I’m taking it as the opportunity to redo my whole ui.
Blizzard does not have ANY of the addon code, so they can’t do anything to that code. They can’t copy it, etc.
Usually EVERY WoW expansion and MOST WoW major patches break addons.
The addon developer (thousands of different people worldwide) needs to fix the addon and publish a new version. That takes hours, days, weeks or months for each addon. Each addon is handled by a different non-Blizzard person.
The good news is that CE servers won’t change, so Classic Vanilla addons will continue to work there. The bad news is that TBC servers WILL change, and those changes may cause addons to break.
I anticipate that, when the pre-patch hits, we will have another folder, classic_tbc. When the dust settles, I plan to ensure my existing, classic addons are in both classic and classic_tbc, then I’ll go to Curseforge for updates. Curseforge already has a classic tbc filter for addons.
My ElvUI profile script has been done for weeks and now as new updated addons hit the repos my UI is nearly complete. I am only missing a couple of small addons at this point.
