I used a Gorilla in Ulda, the Thunderstomp is good at getting AoE aggro, as long as group is FF
I don’t get it. Even with surv talents, a hunter’s melee dps is well below that of any dps class, and the hunter has no positive threat multipliers, except distracting shot which they can’t use in melee, so?
If you mean hunter PET tank, yeah that’ll work in a lot of scenarios but you would go BM, not Surv, and have the pet growling. For a dungeon boss the pet couldn’t hold the boss against dps going all out, but if for some reason you really wanted to try that you could talk the dps into dialling it back a notch.
A hunters total dps is his and his pet added together. That total is roughly equivalent to any other dps class with about the same gear. Just the hunters dps alone not adding pet dps will sometimes pull aggro off the pet. A pet holding aggro with a full group dpsing is highly unlikely. Even with growl, pet dps, and intimidation. Screech will never hold aggro against a mage aoe.
In dungeon, it can hold off none aoe fight boss, especially leveling dungeon. Example, mara princess. They are never meant to tank raid anyway
Not correct. There are hunter pets which AOE aggro exceptionally well, hence why people have tanked quite well as a hunter.
Thunder stomp is a better aoe aggro than screech but it’s on a cool down. You can’t use it often enough with a group going all out to hold aggro. The dps would have to significantly nerf their dps and use of aoe.
Could probably hold aggro on one mob and kite them around but not sure how they would deal with multiple mobs.
Random petrol in dungeon not that scary, you could done a dungeon with 4 dps and warlock or hunter pet tanking. Any melee dps can tank a single elite creep, you could have 2 pet class. But that is only viable in 5 man dungeon especially leveling. You only need the pet hold aggro on boss
is to save your healer if he aggro
Yes I have a hunter, there are limits to him holding aggo on three mobs. If I multishot, they are coming at me, let alone anyone else with better DPS. So again, I am actually curious if there is video proof of a run on a 40+ dungeon where it went as smooth as a real tank is all.
I have seen hunter pets tank, you usually have to be a few levels above the instance…
for example, when a tank left group in WC my wifes pet tanked the instance and we finished… but she was level 22/23 and had a defensive pet… most people are doing WC @ 17…
I get that and have done it as well – lower dungeons I will not argue but like I said – Ulda and above I see those going very poorly if you do not have a real tank is all.
So i Lv in BRD i skilled 120 fire resist and what i would do is solo tank with my pet the fire elemental while the tank would tank the dark iron dwarf.
Most tank- i rolled whit let me put the fire elemental so pet would take a good aggro on them. BTW warrior tank get destroy by arcane caster or any elemental damage dealer.
dont get surprize if you die in a few second again the small arcane caster . Fire damage dont care about your armor
There is a video from Vanilla of a hunter tanking Nef. Granted that was at the end of Vanilla’s lifespan but it happened.
yea but owl just isnt as cool as a Gorilla named Snotbox… and if group is FF the adds dont matter so much…
In Vanilla we used a cat pet to tank Onyxia a time or two for funsies, so yeah, it can work.
Works okay in lower level dungeons if you have a competent group but it won’t work after RFK. I’ve done it a couple times after the tank left but it’s a lot of micro managing to want to do it over and over again. It works a lot better if you are closer to the highest level for the dungeon.
Distracting shot has nothing to do with tanking. We wear mail, most healers wear cloth. Distracting shot is there for saves if the healer pulls aggro. We will last longer than a clothie plus have a pet to peel the thing off ourselves. I’m not saying not to try it out for fun but hunter’s were never intended to tank. OT sure, MT no.
Most 5mans can be “tanked” by anyone with a half-decent set of gear equipped and access to at least one defensive mechanic. That being said, the closest thing to Hunter “tanking” is through the use of a defensive pet, not the Hunter themselves.
Without any real scaling defensively outside of Agility stacking, you’ll lack any real Armor when hits inevitably land, you have nothing to mitigate Crushing Blows and Critical Strikes, and the scaling on your melee skills is absolutely pitiful with no additional threat modifiers.
