I’ve never done an allied race but I’d like to unlock void elves and get their really cool heritage armor.
Where do I start?
Level a character of that race from 20 to 110.
Edited so I don’t get a bunch of people "achkchualy"ing me as though there’s a difference between starter level and 110/120 to anyone with a brain.

For Void Elves specifically:
You’ll need to be exalted with the Argussian Reach Faction. This faction is located on Argus, which is part of the Legion expansion content. There are plenty of guides out there on how to get to Argus, and how to progress the reputation.
Once you do this, you’ll need to head to Stormwind to unlock Void Elves as a playable race. The location is at the top center section of Stormwind, the Stormwind Embassy.
After Void Elves have been unlocked, just level one naturally from 1-120. You’ll receive a quest at that point, just follow it to unlock the heritage armor.

Guess I’ll start in shadowlands then with the level squish
You might as well start working on the rep now. If you have numerous 110+ characters, do all the Argus world quests that give rep tokens for Argussian Reach. These can be mailed to your main and cut down the time to grind the rep significantly. I had them exalted in like 4 days.

As Nemsy mentioned, I’d start taking your regular character/main through Argus now etc to get the rep to MAKE the void elves. Once you do all of that, do the intro quests with your main and are able to make an actual velf character, then you can hold off for SL to level them through whatever zone you’d want.
I’d do the rep stuff to MAKE them now though, because you’ll have to do Argus quests for the rep either way.

Since there’s ages till SL may as well work on it now.
I’m actually planning to go back and do the PFs for Legion and WoD because i’m nearly done with the currently prog i’m after in this patch.
Believe get exalted with argussian reach in Argus; complete the void elf quest chain lvl your void elf 20-110 and you get your heritage armor

The allied races you just have to level from 20 to 110. I assume you then go to the embassy in Stormwind or Orgrimmar and get a short quest chain.
The core races require you to be max level and exalted w/ your faction.
I have done all the core ones and enjoyed them very much. Little disappointed w/ the worgen and goblin armor but all in all it was a fun time and the rewards are generally worth the time.

You have months before SL comes out, you could easily do the it now and still have time left over to gear up your new VE character. It’s not like SLs is just around the corner.
they start at level 20, and you only need to level to 110 
if you haven’t already got the race unlocked, there’s no reason to wait on that part.
